(Kent Allard, American ace aviator, who fought for the French during WWI, decides to travel through East Asia after the war, where he tries to "find himself". After protecting a small village from a group of vicious raiders, he is taken to a sacred temple, where a Tulku holy man teaches him to "cloud men's minds" and make them weak, in order to protect the innocent from evil. Already a skilled marksman, Allard was tought the art of self defense by a local villager who was grateful for his heroism. After channeling several supernatural abilities through his mind, Allard ventures to South America, where a run-in with local drug pushers forces him to fake his death. He returns to America, and resides in New York City. Kent Allard is dead, so with his new power of altering the appearance of his face, he assumes identities of several other citizens, alive or dead. Most of the time he's Henry Arnaud; a wealthy businessman with ties to Police Commissioner, Wainwright Barth. Or, he's an elderly man named Isaac Twambley. His main interest is a wealthy "man about town" playboy named Lamont Cranston. Cranston bears an uncanny resemblence to Allard. He also happens to be Commissioner Barth's one and only nephew. After assuming Cranston's identity whilst Lamont is away and at play, he's able to get some hardcore detective work accomplished. He also values from Cranston's lifestyle when he's able to make a friend and informant out of suave reporter, Clyde Burke, who just happens to be the real Lamont Cranston's good and close friend. Allard soon dons a black suit, black overcoat, black fedora hat, a crimson red cloak and two custom-made pistols. With his new powers and costume, he becomes "The Shadow", a rising vigilante that begins protecting The Big Apple from crime and corruption. He becomes quite a menace to both criminals and the police, particularly a bloodhound detective named Joseph Cardona. Allard knows he can't pull this off alone, so he begins making contacts within the police department and starts growing a small group of "agents", through the lives of people he's saved. A post office employee named Edwin Burbank was his first. Burbank was being mugged on his way home, when The Shadow intervened. The Shadow demanded that Burbank operate his one and only headquarters for each and every one of his contact agents. His first contact agent was a financial buisnessman named Claude Fellows, whom the Shadow met under the guise of Henry Arnaud. Arnaud saved him from financial bankruptcy, therefore landing Fellows in his debt. When Arnaud told Fellows about and where to meet The Shadow, their bond was forged. Another such agent is a fearless operative for the Justice Department named Myra Reldon, whom The Shadow saved from gangsters. She spent many years, herself, in Asia, learning Chinese cultures. When the Shadow saved her from death, she vowed her allegiance to his cause. Another is a suicidal gumshoe named Harry Vincent, whom the Shadow saved from jumping off a bridge, while disguised as a cop named George Clarendon. Another is an NYU scientist named Dr. Roy Tam, who witnessed a mob murder. Together, they are his eyes and ears to a trail that leads to an elusive, dangerous villain who embodies powers that even The Shadow cannot comprehend.)

Cranston respects the Shadow and his work, so he offers his identity and resources to The Shadow whenever he needs help. He even employs the services of his cabbie, Shrevy, who is eager to help after The Shadow saved him from two criminal customers who dared to kill him. Lately, The Shadow has been posing as a police department janitor by the name of Melvin Burr, in order to eavesdrop on any info deemed worthy of his knowledge. At the moment, the Shadow is at war with a dangerous underworld crimelord known as Flash Gidley, whose face has never been seen. Gidley is somewhat psychic, making his every move unpredictable to The Shadow. Even with help from his loyal agents, Harry Vincent and Dr. Roy Tam, his clues always hit a dead end. The Shadow has reformed a brute mob enforcer named Jericho Druke to be his "inside man" within Gidley's organization. He also saves the life of an insufferable stockbroker named Rutledge Mann, whom he orders to keep tabs on mob bank accounts. The new Police Watch Commander, Ralph Weston, is determined to help Detective Cardona bring down both Gidley and The Shadow. However, Cranston has been informing The Shadow of his ties with a suspcious company known as Globe Aircraft, headed by mogul, Guy Chadbury, and his top technical advisor, Paul Brent. Brent, just returned from Brazil, seems not himself. The Shadow uses Harry's reconaissance to discover that Chadbury's niece, Beatrice, is the secondary benefactor of Globe Aircraft, and that another mysterious woman is using her identity. Brent's strange behavior and the murder of his partner, Bob Ryndon, leads The Shadow to learn that there is someone higher up the ladder controlling an unseen game of espionage, when Paul Brent creates a new, unofficial line of advanced military aircraft and eventually weapons. Paul's actions are unbeknownst to Chadbury or his niece, who is starting to act not herself, either. Before long, The Shadow learns of a new royalty figure of Asian heritage in the city, with wealthy connections and several loyal bodyguards. His name is Shiwan Khan; the last descendant of Genghis Khan. He spent many years abroad, learning telepathy from Tibetan monks. After lusting for power to become the "New ruling Khan", he set his eyes on technological warfare. He too, has the ability to hypnotize and cloud minds such as The Shadow, making him a rather formiddable foe. When The Shadow and Lamont Cranston learn it is Khan who is controlling this race for arms, they dare to take him head on. Khan's inside mole, Lana Luan, is attempting to pose as Beatrice Chadbury in order to have her and her uncle assassinated, and gain control of Globe Aircraft. But, when Jericho Druke discovers that Khan and Flash Gidley are in cahoots, The Shadow knows that Commissioner Barth is the only police assistance he's going to get.)
