They will never make another movie like this

Seriously, one of a kind movie.

A true gem of the 90s

I liked it.
Bought it & The Phantom for my daughter to watch with me since I've been a Marvel fan for years.
I think the era might have put people off, but it has a great cast.

Rewatching part of it, it's a weird movie in terms of actual filmmaking. I really struggled with some of the choices the director made regarding sets and location and, while the score is amazing, the score would literally just be glued on top of scenes, being more obvious and there than actually enhancing the scene, as it should be doing.

Definitely was amazing in the 90s. But I kind of struggled re-watching it yesterday. And the blue-screen effects did not hold up (but the CGI did!!).

yeah, its sad they will never make a movie like this again. everything today has got to be "realistic and gritty". we'll never see a true "comic book movie" that isnt afraid to be cool and fun and over the top. the visuals really suck today, they dont know how to be true to the character. the shadow i technically not a comic book hero *although he did have his own comic series later on* but hes one of the coolest visually awsome and truly interesting characters with abilities many other superheroes dont have. definetly unique. likewise, the big budget movie of the 90's is a gem and it has a definite comic book feel to it, all while being a peiod piece set in the 1940's. i think thats brilliant. the score by goldsmith is one of his best most atmospheric scores, and cmon the shadows theme is kickass, almost on par with danny elfmans moody batman theme.

Realism, Remakes and Unnecessary Sequels are ruining movies!

The Shadow is a beautifully designed movie that holds up well today. The story is pretty good too. It's a great film that doesn't take itself too seriously and knows how to be fun without overdoing it. It's dark without being too serious like everything has to be these days. I can't wait for the Shout Factory BluRay.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I hope they never make another movie like this again. I may be in the minority here, but this 1994 movie adaptation of The Shadow is not all its cracked up to be and I'm sorry to say it, it sucks. What I want those morons at Hollywood to make is a movie that does justice to The Shadow and isn't afraid of being dark and gritty like the pulps were. But they'll have to grow some brains first, sadly.

reply

Grow brains? Everything these days is dark and gritty. It wouldn't be a stretch at all for them to do a movie that would stay closer to the old pulps. Sam Raimi had expressed interest in making a film that was truer to the original version, but I don't know if it will ever get made. The Shadow isn't exactly a proven commodity in this day and age, so studios wouldn't be convinced that it would turn a profit. Sad but true.

Damn right.

Everything these days is dark and gritty. It wouldn't be a stretch at all for them to do a movie that would stay closer to the old pulps.

I guess. But you know, Hollywood can have a very dark and gritty movie, comic book based or not, and still mess it up. Look at the Spirit, or even DareDevil, and imo Batman Returns. They need to grow some brains and hire people passionate about The Shadow and people who are experts on the 1920's, 30's and 40's on board to create what should be a movie series franchise of The Shadow.

Sam Raimi had expressed interest in making a film that was truer to the original version, but I don't know if it will ever get made.

Funny enough, from what I could remember of the 1994 movie, it felt like Sam Raimi actually directed the damn thing himself. I don't like what he did with Spider-Man in his trilogy and I would never trust him to do The Shadow. Keep that man far away from that, I hope it never happens. The 1994 Shadow movie was very much a Sam Raimi Shadow movie and it didn't even have him as a director.

The Shadow isn't exactly a proven commodity in this day and age, so studios wouldn't be convinced that it would turn a profit. Sad but true.

That would be attributed because of the 1994 movie's box office record, primarily. However, dark and gritty has become something valued in this day and age for Hollywood with comic book movies and other movies in general. Also, look at Boardwalk Empire, that's a very successful period piece show that shares a similar historic setting/era like The Shadow. Looks like I'm the only one who has faith in a true to the old pulps Shadow movie series. Oh if only I were a multi-billionaire.

War-path, you aren't the only one who wants a pulp based Shadow movie. The 1994 had a few good scenes but was over the top for me. I want a Shadow movie that is based on the early Shadow pulps and not the later ones that had a lot of Lamont Cranston.
