So the main character had a 109 MPH fast ball and could switch hit 600 ft homeruns, yet his salary was meager 55 million over 4 years??? A guy who could do that would probably be the first billion dollar player today.
I agree, it sounds quite low today. Even it was only a few mil higher than Bret Saberhagen... But I guess he was untested beforehand so it was a bit of a gamble

I don't disagree, but baseball is by far the most difficult to project tools to on-field performance. Most first round football (staying with American sports for this discussion) and basketball picks go directly to the pro teams and compete at a very high level almost immediately. Few first round picks in the NFL or NBA are disappointments. Many first round MLB picks never get out of the minor leagues.
