is it true that a match can last over 8 hours?

Technically, yes; a game could last over eight hours but this is very uncommon.

The longest professional game ever (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_professional_baseball_game) lasted 8 hours, 25 minutes and took 33 innings to complete.

Games at Coors Field in Colorado used to take 4 hours because there were so many runs being scored.

Also, when Greg Maddux was in his prime, it wasn't uncommon for games he pitched to finish in under two hours because he worked so fast and got so many ground ball outs.

alot of yankee games go over 4 hrs for the same reason... alot of runs

Well that and they try to run up pitch counts in order to reach the bullpen.
