This movie is ridicluous...

I've read all the reviews and almost no one, except someone from the user comments, whom I'm about to quote, has mentioned the fact the entire premise of this movie is totally forced and contrived beyond belief.

So Albert Brooks finds the greatest baseball player of all time, but instead of saying he's ready to play, he says he is going to sit out the entire season abd only play if the Yankees make the world series... and then he'll play his first MLB baseball game in the World Series! Huh???

This is totally absurb beyond belief. Why isn't he ready to play? Why doesn't Albert Brooks want him to play? If he is not ready to play, why would he suddently be ready to play in most important game(s) of the season with absolutely no experience in the major leagues or other professional training through the course of the film?

Any way, someone in the user comments says this, and I totally agree, but no one else has even dicussed it yet. It seems like a significant point to overlook. I don't know much about baseball, but I know that that idea is just nuts.

"A guy whose first ever major league appearance is in Game One of the World Series - not only a ludicrous prospect for dramatic purposes, but completely impossible in real life (the rules of baseball don't allow this, discussion ends there). "

If he was on the 40 man roster the entire time than she he can play according to the rules.

And why in holy hell would the team not want to play him. He had a 110 MPH fastball! He can make almost any demand and the team would accept it so if he says he wants to wait until the series than so be it.

Hell a guy who could pitch like that could probably demand the team colors be changed and he gets to bang the owners wife and they would give it to him.

Theres no rule that says your first game can't be game one of the world series. Anyone can pitch Jose canseco has been known to pitch. As long as he belongs to the yankees they can do whatever they want with him and call him up whenver. Most guys dont even get called up until after june 15th these days so they can get screwed on their rookie contracts. Also you can get called up and sent down all throughout the season happens all the time just look at homer baileys career

Seriously? Al said that Steve didn't want to take any blame if the team did badly since they were already pretty far into the schedule. The GM asked about if the team got into the World Series because he knew how good he was and he would be a huge asset in the series. It wasn't some throw away thing that happened. Pay closer attention to the movie.

I dont remember if the exact month was implied within the movie of his signing, but to be eligible for the postseason, a player MUST be on the 25 man roster (or DL or suspended or bereavement list) by August 31st. If he is not on the 25 man roster on August 31st, and is called up after that, they are not allowed to be on the post season roster. So, I highly doubt that the Yankees would play with only a 24 man roster while Steve sits at home waiting to see if they will even get into October.

But regardless of the actual rules, I still like this movie.

I'm not as concerned with the actual rule of baseball per se..

The quote above is exactly my point. On what basis, in holy hell or elsewhere, can the filmmakers have us believe that Albert Brooks could keep a player with such God-given talent, but not one second of actual big league experience, out of an entire season would allow him to strike a bargain to put his player in the biggest game of the season as his very first game.

Throwing fast is wonderful, but it does not in itself win games anyway. You have to throw accurately and handle stress of big games well and garner experience against professional hitters. You have exhibit sound judgement. You have to prove you don't get spooked and screw up in high pressure situations, etc, etc. to be an effective major league pitcher. Brendan Frazier has proven none of that because he has never played A SECOND OF MLB.

You don't just put a guy like that into the first game of the World Series. It's insane. It's impossible. It would NEVER HAPPEN IN A MILLION YEARS.

Plus, my analysis is borne out by the actual movie. Btrendan Frazier turned out to be a basket case who ran away instead of facing his big moment because he was spooked.
