Was Scott Clavin preselected as the new Santa?

I've seen this movie numerous times, and it finally occurred to me, that maybe Scott was preselected to be the new Santa. Here are a few things I've noticed:

1. He has the same initials as Santa Claus, and he is a toymaker.

2. The old Santa deliberately made enough noise to wake Scott up. When he goes outside, it looks like Santa is listening in the chimney to see if he hears anyone awake. If he was planning on delivering his presents to that house, he would have been carrying he sack.

3. When old Santa is on the ground, he waves to Scott, basically saying "Good Luck"

4. When Scott gets to the North Pole, nobody seems to be surprised there is a new Santa. Even Bernard looked like he was expecting someone new.

5. The elves are hidden all over the movie. Most of the time, you seem them after Scott puts on the suit. The classroom, the soccer game, ETC. However there are also seen before. In the very beginning looking in the store window, and also one at Denny's. The one at Denny's is putting on his coat when Scott, and Charlie are being seated. Its also possible that all the fathers in Denny's were candidates for the new job.

Opinions?

good post!

1. I think that Scott having the same initials as Santa is coincidental.
**EDIT**
I don't know what I was thinking when I first posted. I think that Santa and Scott having the same initials was done on purpose by Santa.

2. Maybe he'd already delivered the presents
3. True. I think that wave was a "good luck" type of thing.
4. It could be your answer or maybe they're so used to a "new" Santa that they don't worry. Or they've already been prepared.
5. Yeah, I think the elves that we don't notice in the beginning are foreshadows of Scott's future as Santa. Also, they may have been sent to scout future Santas.

Overall, I think that maybe he was pre-selected. I've never really thought about it before. But, perhaps the elves and Bernard scout for new Santas; people who might be good for the job or people who might really need the job like Scott. He needed to become Santa so that his relationship with Charlie would change.

"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"

I agree. Like he said in the third one, it's something that chooses you. That could have been the previous Santa's first stop.

Clavin?

Wonder if he's related to Cliff Clavin?

I definitely think it was predestined. Here are my reasons:

If you saw the third movie, when Jack Frost stole Santa's coat, Scott went back to what his "normal" life would have been if he had never been Santa. It's possible then, that the original Santa from SC1 had the same fate.

Also in the third movie, when Scott stops Jack Frost, he says, "Santa isn't something you can take, it's something that chooses you". This seems to imply that Scott was specifically chosen to be Santa and that Santa falling off his particular roof wasn't a random happenstance.

Back to the original film, Scott and Charlie come out of the house because they hear a lot of noise on the roof. Wouldn't a seasoned Santa Claus know how to quietly get on and off of the roof without making noise? It's almost like he wanted Scott to come out, see him and "scare" him into falling off the roof.

There is also the issue of the elves that show up in the beginning (At Denny's for example). This is before Santa falls off Scott's roof. Why are they keeping tabs on Scott who, at that point, was a nobody?

Later, when Scott gets to the North Pole for the first time, there is no mourning and no surprise from any of the elves. They all act like they expected it and are all prepared to bring him up to speed when he shows up.

So, my theory is that the first Santa Claus felt he was ready to retire and, after talking it over with the elves, specifically chose Scott to be his successor, came up with the plan to land on Scott's roof, attract his attention and fall off the roof thereby letting Scott take over. He then went back to a non-Santa life and lived the rest of his days in quite retirement.

I was just watching this on Netflix last night, but I did not notice the elf at Denny's. I will have to go back and look at that scene again. But I like this theory! :^)

I have never thought the previous Santa died, since he waved goodbye before disappearing. But I thought he just got tired of the job and wanted out, so he sort of staged his own "death". But this all fits better if Scott has been pre-selected, since the elves would have picked someone who would be likely to put on the suit and carry out the rest of the deliveries. Because what would have happened if the supposed next Santa just walked back into the house and went to sleep -- pretty short movie! :^)

I was just thinking that about staging his own death. Santa would know how to get out of the job if he ever got tired of it. Maybe he worked it out with the elves beforehand and that's why they're following Scott and that's why they're so blasé when he shows up at the North Pole. Maybe he told them he was tired of it so they found Scott to give him a way out of it.

I just watched the first one and I think it was a coincidence that he became Santa. I agree he is a toy maker and his initials are SC, I haven't seen the 2nd and 3rd one in a long while I'm hoping ABC Family will show the other two within the next week.

I swear I never saw background easter-eggy elves until after reading this post. Cool.

Maybe there's a set term that you're a Santa - say, 30 years.
After that time you get to retire and a new Santa is chosen.

So, in 2024 we'll get 'Santa Clause 4: The 401K(lause)'.

I don't think the initials are a factor since that limits to options for the next Santa.
