How exactly did the group of kids come to accept Richie?

I thought about this recently. Initially, Richie tried to make friends with them by betting that he could hit a baseball farther than one of the kids. They didn't seem to like him at first, or at least Gloria didn't seem to want him around. So how did Cadbury get Gloria's mom to bring them by to hang out with Richie? I know he won them over somehow, but didn't they initially want nothing to do with him?

All I need is one mic...

He offered them money.

When they're leaving, one of the kids says "That penguin dude promised us $100 each if we'd come here and hang out for the day."

Maybe they figured if they got in on Richie's good graces, they could get more later...maybe if they found his piggy bank.
