I think "The Real World" is often credited for being the first big reality show and first started the reality genre. I think the way that the documentary was shown on In Your Face was based on The Real World.

In 1973, PBS broadcast the 12-episode, "An American Family," which put cameras in the house of the Loud family in Santa Barbara, California. One of the children was openly gay (no doubt a shock at the time), and the parents were going through a divorce.
Yep. There was a movie made about that too, Cinema Verite starring Diane Lane.
Though I must admit, when I just rewatched this movie for the first time since seeing it in the theaters when it first came out, I laughed and said "so she's responsible for all of this reality crap today!"
