lost to Forrest Gump?

Yeah Gump played to the Boomers nostalgia for growing up. IMO thats the main reason it won best picture. It also beat Shawshank redemption which could have won just as easily as Pulp Fiction.

I think the 3rd best of those 3 won.

The academy has proven time and time again that it will always pick the "safer" movie, rather than the bold and original movie. Rocky beat Taxi Driver, Gump beat Pulp Fiction, How green was my valley beat Citizen Kane, none of Kubrick's films ever got best picture or director(some of his really good ones missing a nomination altogether), and almost every other "daring" film that many regard as truly exceptional has lost to a movie that everyone agrees is pretty good but doesn't pave new ground or do anything significant, like Pulp Fiction did.

Imho, PF kicked the crap out of FG.
They aren't even in the same league.
PF was innovative with a format not really seen before. I guess some old Hollywood muckety mucks were too afraid and went with the sickening sweet safe Forest Gump.

Not as insulting as when Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan. Forrest Gump was at least memorable, who remembers Shakespeare in Love?

"Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop."

Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption are three of the greatest films of all time. The Academy has done a lot of *beep* ups, but whatever film they'd choose that year, the other two would have lost undeservedly.

Forrest Gump is seriously not such a great movie. It certainly is epic, and heart warming. But it is also pretty simple and definitly wasn't something really innovative (it was original in its way, but doesn't mean it brings anything new). If anything, FG could be seen as a satire of the american history, but I didn't feel that it was done with any particular subtlity. Some scenes just seemed forced and lame (I would have lived just fine without all those fake shots with some of the iconic people from the time era the movie is set in). Still, it's by no mean a bad movie. But it's definitely among those Best Picture winners that we could honestly question.
