This seems to be common opinion between people. But what he did since Pulp Fiction? I can only mention maybe supporting role in The Thin Red Line and Face/Off which was a action film. Nothing else, nothing and the last 10 years his been more famous for his scandals rather than movies.
He made several popular hit movies in the mid to late 90s and this film is what got him back on track. In '95, right after Pulp, he starred in the hit summer action flick Broken Arrow and also the hit comedy Get Shorty, of which he won a bunch of awards and was expected to get his second straight Oscar nomination. Then there were modest hits with Michael, Phenomenon, then a big hit in Face/Off and the critically acclaimed A Civil Action. Oh, just look it up!
this was called Travolta's comeback because he had lately been working the children films "Looks who's talking". maybe the public was losing respect for him as an actor
yes "Look who's talking" films did make big money as a matter of fact i was one of the kids watching back then. my thought based only off a few old articles is maybe Hollywood was thinking John Travolta would not ever work a serious adult themed film again
Travolta was heading to the D-List when Pulp Fiction hit, and in his subsequent several movies, he was the headline star and commanding top salary, once again.
Here was Travolta's 5 years previous to Pulp:
The Experts - mildly amusing, grossed a whopping $169K. Yep, that ain't millions, that's THOUSANDS. Look Who's Talking - Surprising box office hit, original concept Look Who's Talking Two - Stinker of a sequel, made a fraction of the original. Chains of Gold - Bonus points if you've ever heard of this movie. Eyes of an Angel - D-List, population YOU Shout - See Chains of Gold Look Who's Talking Now - Turd of a paycheck movie, bombed at the box office. This time the pets talk, not the babies...shark jump, achieved!
Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
Yes....although those awful "Look Who's Talking" movies made money, they were kiddie movies. People who star in kiddie movies usually wind up kicked to the curb once the kiddies they acted for start to grow up.
I agree on the sequels, but the original Look Who's Talking was a fresh little comedy with great chemistry between Kirstie Alley and John Travolta and features many lines about lesbians and artificial insemination that would be controversial by today's standards. It's far from being a kiddie movie and it manages to appeal to both audiences.
The sequels were plain awful and QT did a great service to Travolta but Look Who's Talking is a childhood's favorite and I think one of his Top 10 movies.
Well, Look Who's Talking in 1989 sort of revived his career a bit, since that was the first hit he had had in several years. Then he did some other films that weren't so great. This film was another comeback because he got another Oscar nod for it and since then, was in big films that did well. Some roles might've been supporting, but at least he was in big films again.
