When did Butch childhood flashback take place? How old is he?

Young Butch is maybe 8 at the oldest... in the flashback
His fathers POW companion says he's had the watch himself for 7 years (was Butch conceived during his fathers captivity?)
The flashback might possibly have taken place in 1975 at the earliest, nineteen years before present-day. Movie is from 1994.
That would make adult Butch 27 years old at the oldest... is that really the age of a washed-up boxer? He looks 40.
At 40 years old, he would have been born in 1954... and able to be drafted in Vietnam.

I couldn't believe when I read his filmography that he played a toilet (no joke) in According to Jim

I would put the decor in the apartment and the dress style of Butch's mother at about 1971 or 1972. You can see small bottles of wine on a kind of wickerwork frame on the wall, and that is very early 1970s.

So Butch was 28 in the present-day?

Willis was physically fit-looking in PF (I have seen photos of him, apparently between films, where he could do with losing some weight) but he also looked like he was about 40 and the character would have to be someone in their late 20s to fit the chronology. They could have gone with a younger actor although Willis has some box office draw.
Shot-down US airmen in Vietnam were being released from "Hanoi pits of hell" certainly in 1973, with the Paris cease-fire, and perhaps some were released one or two years earlier.

agreed
I don't know how common it was for households to have color televisions in 1973-75, but Butch's mom did collect a pension from a deceased airman so its possible.
