I think this is a Robert Downey Jr (Peter Wright) lovefest thread going on here and I probably shouldn't stick my neck out here, but.... I find him (almost in every role) superficially charming, amusing, and a talented actor.
Ok, maybe this is just what the role called for, but underneath that veneer, I think he seems somewhat deceptive, selfish, and manipulative, a bit like his drug-crazed character in Less Than Zero, and, I suspect, much like he is in real life (if you follow the headlines). Lying as a basis for the relationship and then escalating the lie by hiring a fake Damon Bradley may seem desperately romantic, but in real life it would be manipulative and creepy. He can act charming, like on the romantic date in Rome or while helping her get ready for her date in the hotel in Positano, but when she cannot see him, he is carelessly tossing her photos around and then stealing one. Deceiving to get what he wants is selfish, and not thinking about his effect on others seems to be his way. Like, another example might be him sitting in an airline seat and putting his feet up (shoes removed) on the headrest of the seat in front of him. Petty I know, but it is an indicator of his inner character.
I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from liking him if that is what you like, but this is my "read" on him.

First You need a life it is just a movie.
Second the character of the movie has NOTHING to do with the actors character and get a life!
Third Start going to movies to enjoy not dissect a movie. Just enjoy!
