The Phone Call

My wife and watched this movie, and find what seems to be an unanswered mystery in the movie.

According to the comments made by Robert Downey Jr.'s character in Italy, he has met her for the
first time, and seems to have known nothing about her previously.

So the big question is: Who the heck called Marissa's character just days before the wedding, saying they are at the airpoirt, and leaving for Venice?

My wife and I assumed (from watching the trailer) that it would be RD Jr's character, yet we saw nothing
that indicated this. Did anyone else see something in the movie that explained the mystery?

If so, in what scene?

reply

I've thought about this, too.

The only explanation that I can come up with is that it was a factual coincience, with a kind of mystical means of making Damon Bradley her "destiny."

Near the end, Faith's brother admits that he teased her with the name Damon Bradley, but it was a real person (kind of nerdy), whom he had known in school. All of the characters, except for Robt. Downey Jr., grew up in Pittsburgh. So, it would make sense that Faith's fiance ALSO knew the real Damon Bradley (they're all about the same age).

I think it was a coincidence that the real D.B. called her fiance (she said that he had his calls forwarded to her apartment) to say "hi," and that he was on his way to Venice. That also fulfills the prophecy that D.B. played a part in her "destiny." It was HIS call that made her take off for Italy, where she met Robert Downey, Jr.

Fantasy, to be sure, but a fun one.

reply

Ummm...Damon Bradley called for Faith's fiance a few days before the wedding to tell him congratulations on the wedding and that he could not make it because he had to go to Venice. However, her fiance was in surgery so she took the message. She recognized the name Damon Bradley as the one the Ouija board and the fortune teller said was her soulmate when she was a kid. She didn't know that her brother had been playing around with her on the Ouija board and with the fortune teller by giving the name of a kid he disliked. Anyway, Faith dropped everything and followed Damon to Italy because she wanted to find out if he was her soulmate. So the person who called from the airport was the REAL Damon Bradley who happened to be a childhood friend of Dwayne, her fiance. And she didn't meet Peter until she got to Italy. They didn't meet each other until he chased her down to give her the shoe back.

reply

To expand on Cloudburts2000's very good explanation... Peter didn't know anything about Faith until after they spent the evening walking together through the City.

reply

Exactly! Peter and Faith had no idea each other existed until they met in Venice. In a way, Damon Bradley WAS Faith's destiny. He ultimately led her to her soulmate. If Faith's brother had not played the trick on Faith with the Ouiji board and the fortune teller saying that Damon Bradley was her soulmare, she would never have followed Damon to Italy and would never have met Peter. Therefore, Damon DID play a large role in Faith finding her destiny...or, at least, his name did. If not for Damon, Faith and Peter would have probably never have met. It was fate that her brother tricked her so she would follow Damon across the ocean to meet her true love.

reply

Wait, but... if Destiny IS destiny.. doesn't that meant that, no matter what, Peter and Faith were going to end up meeting anyway, through DB or not?

reply

I was wondering about that too..

although explanation is clear enough, that the guy who did call was the real damon bradley (friend of faith's brother), he still had to be in Italy right?

My friend and I were assuming that the Damon bradley they found in the airport near the end of the movie was in fact the brother's friend. (the movie didn't actually confirm this though).

but further questions:
>> didn't that damon bradley just arrived in italy? (not usre, maybe i should listen to that part again...)

>> and why oh why was it peter's (robert downey jr) voice when "damon bradley" called? that was very misleading.

reply

i don't think it was downey's voice... i've seen the movie a thousand times and i don't think i've ever heard that and thought it was him!

reply

Really?

first time I heard it I screamed like a fan girl and immediately thought "it's him, it's him!"

okay, i maybe exaggerating, but yeah. I immediately thought it was him.
I still think so after watching it again.

is it just me?

reply

Yes, I was sure it was RDJ on the phone. But there was a question on IMDB whether he was really Damon Bradley, so I knew there was a "twist." But I'm pretty sure they did use his voice to make the phone call, which does make it more confusing....

reply

Hah, I had the same reaction, just without the screaming. ;)
I'm pretty sure it was him, but it's possible I'm wrong.

I asked you not to tell me that!

reply

ok:

larrys friend, the actual damon bradly, is the one that called wen faith was in the wedding dress.

he is why she went to italy, met RDJ and fell in love.

THEN as they were in the airport at the end, it was destiny that had the lady page damon bradly so both faith and peter would come to find each otehr in the same place. and that was the real damon bradly at the airport. im pretty sure it's to be assumed.

and i dotn care if it WAS rdj's voice on the phone, it wasnt supoed to be him. so theres my explanation, lol

Yes, i think they gather that now, what they are SAYING is that the people who made movie possibly used Downey's voice to leave the message on the machine to cause viewers to THINK for as long as possible that Downey WAS Damon Bradley. It wasn't SUPPOSED to be RDJ but they may have used his voice to kind of cause viewiers to think it was. I honestly can't remember if I thought that when I watched it.

To answer the OP, I for one do NOT think that it was RDJ's voice on the phone. Similar..but no. It was the voice of the real Damon Bradley who we see at the end of the film.

Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.

reply

Agreed. I'm watching this for probably the 15th time right now and "the phone call" was about 10 minutes ago - Not RDJ. RDJ has such a distinctive voice there would be no doubt in anyone's mind that it was him on the phone IF it were him. It's the REAL "Damon Bradley" on the phone that they meet at the airport at the end. "Damon Bradley" also has a pretty generic "male" voice, so that helps with the mystery at first.

Besides the caller not sounding much like RDJ, there is also the fact that it would be very strange for them to have had RDJ voice the part of a completely different character. I think those that hear "RDJ" only hear him because they were anticipating his appearance (since it's pretty obvious he is the male lead).

reply

I actually rewatched that part a few times after reading this thread and it really sounds like RDJ. There's a possibility it's not him, but the way the caller pauses and speaks really sounds like the way RDJ talks. He has this unique way of talking that reflects his personality, and it's hard to imitate, which is why I'm inclined to think it really was his voice on the phone. Of course it's not logical in terms of the movie, but it's quite possible they used his voice to convince people he was Damon Bradley, so their 'twist' would work a little better.

I only do it with superheroes.

reply

Their "twist" wouldn't work if they expected us to recognize the voice on the phone! Seriously, this is a romantic comedy, not a Woody Allen mystery. Robert Downey, Jr. DOES have a very distinct voice and thus it would have been really obvious that it was him calling if he voiced a character that wasn't even his.

I can't even figure how to explain it any clearer... This wasn't some indie movie that was lacking for actors or money. Most likely, they had the actor who plays Damon Bradley read his lines for the phone the same day they had him shoot his scene (which could have been the very first scene they shot!).
