I'm completely baffled
Although I didn't see NORTH when it came out in 1994, I was aware of all the abrasive negative criticism. I was somewhat taken aback by what I read, but never decided to go watch the movie for myself. Last week, after several days of revisiting the criticism on the internet, I obtained a copy of the VHS and decided to finally watch it for myself. Some 17 years after the fact.
Whereas certain reviews of this movie branded it "unfunny" "hateful" "offensive" "excruciating" "obnoxious" etc. However I found it to be a pleasant, humorous, and for the most part inoffensive family film. (I recently viewed the movie SCARFACE with Al Pacino, and I can say Al's movie was a million times more offensive, hateful and obnoxious...and three hours long!!). NORTH may be no "Gone With The Wind" and there are occasional missteps with the dialog. But it's never boring and held my interest throughout. The family message it's trying to present is valid. In my opinion, pleasant Saturday afternoon fare.
After the movie ended I must admit I was completely puzzled why this was branded "the worst movie of all time" by the public. It truly isn't. I know the movie's reputation won't improve much, even after this post, but I can ensure the more open-minded family film watchers that NORTH is definitely better than its reputation suggests. The internet trolls will continue to bash the movie and probably leave some obnoxious and obscene responses to this thread, (see Stephencjones13 ridiculous comment on the 'Yay for North' IMDB thread). But in my opinion, the movie is fine.
The biggest critical overreaction in movie history? It just might be.
My rating: Three stars out of four.
