The Inevitable Question About NORTH:

where there any red flags that warned that it would be a turkey?
Turkeys always have ways of advertising that they will not be any good. In the case of HEAVEN'S GATE, the warning sign was that Cimino spent so much money making it that, even if it had been a success, it would have taken forever to get back the budget that was spent on it. In the case of ISHTAR, the warning sign was that Elaine May took such an excessive time editing it that the producers finally lost their patience and yanked the movie away from her.

There werent any red flags as far as I know. From a studio standpoint, North probably seemed like Box Office gold. It was supposed to be a funny kids film directed by Rob Reiner who made a string of successful comedies, Elijah Wood was a young up and coming actor, and there was going to be a massive list of cameos made by A-list stars. Luckily Ebert's thumb proved the studios otherwise.
