......I just picked up the DVD and I'm watching it now. It really
wasn't underrated at all when first released. Unfortunately it just
isn't shown on network or cable tv. Great score by Howard Shore.
The author of the novel and Benton apparently work well together,
"The Ice Harvest" is their third collaboration.

Paul Newman was even nominated for an oscar at the time, I think!

The film just got lost in the shuffle. I never heard of it until years later when a friend recommended it. It came out the same year as Pulp Fiction...I think it just got missed by a lot of people. One of my absolute favorite movies ever.

you watched it, you can’t unwatch it

it got lost in the shuffle because 1994 was the biggest year of all time. forrest gump, pulp fiction, shawshank redemption, hoop dreams, the professional... i think this is just as good as any of those...

I also think this film is underrated and got too little attention when it came out. In 1994 I was myself ouf of job and not doing so well and I identified with Sully's character although I am a woman and not - even now;) - near retimerent age myself. I liked the warmth in this film. I think it dealt beautifully with the imperfections in all of our lives. How we have bad times and not always such brilliant careers, how we hurt our families and friends and other people in bigger and smaller ways - even those of us who are thought to be examplary people, like Sully's landlady's son.

I also liked the way the friendship between Sully and his friend - was he Rob or something? - was presented in the film.

Great performances, not just Newman's. And Bruce Willis going uncredited at the time (he said he didn't want to take the spotlight from Newman) was a cool thing, too. A big small film!
