Saw this for the first time tonight...

I was browsing through DVDs in my local library and came across "Nobody's Fool". I remember seeing coming attractions for it back in '94, but never got around to seeing it.

I found myself totally taken up in the story, and in the character of Sully.
No doubt it is in part to the recent passing of Paul Newman.

A most enjoyable gem of a film! Perfect showcase of Mr. Newman's talent, charm, and screen presence.

I couldn't agree with you more, in fact, I just finished watching it for the first time, and could say that is also among my top rated movies, alongside with Shawshank redemption, Unforgiven, and others.

By the way, could you tell me which other movies rank your favorites? Maybe I could discover new films such as this one. CIAO!

"The Sting", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "The Verdict", "The Hustler", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".

I must admit that I thought he gave a great performance in a guilty pleasure - "The Towering Inferno".

Well, that's quite an impressive list of Paul's...I've already seen "The verdict" for the first time not so long ago, and must say that it's a masterpiece, and also participates David Mamet in it, I'm a great fan of his work.

I remember watching "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" with my old man when i was younger...such a cool movie!!

CHEERS!!!

Yes, I find more pleasure in script-driven movies as well, and not so long ago i watched Local Hero as you recommended and must say I was quite pleased with it, it's a very warm, kind movie, it relaxes you until it finishes and you realize where you are, living in a concrete jungle! haha...
It's rare to find this kind of films, films that have a more profound meaning and are not crying dramas.

CHEERS!

Believe it or not this was my first Paul Newman movie and I know how lame it is to say this but it's true and is still one of my most loved movies.

reply

Hey, it was a great one to start with. (And no, it is NOT lame!)

"Nobody's Fool" is a great film, certainly one of Paul Newman's greatest achievements as an actor. In my opinion he should have won the Best Actor Oscar for 1994 for that film (Tom Hanks took home the prize that year for "Forrest Gump"). Mr. Newman was noted for many memorable roles. He acted in a few truly great films ("The Hustler" and "Hud" top the list along with "Nobody's Fool": those three are the cream of the crop). "Watching "Nobody's Fool" is an extremely moving experience. The movie is in many ways Paul Newman's swan song as an actor. The movie incorporates Newman's screen persona to the max; the character of Sully seems to incorporate bits and pieces of nearly every part he played in past movies, with a humanity that Newman had not quite possessed before, despite his impressive acting chops. I recommend Newman fans and those not that familiar with the actor's talent to watch a double bill of "Hud" (1963) and "Nobody's Fool": two great American films, brilliant in their own right as classics, showcasing the beauty, grace and brilliance of Paul Newman , a genuine movie star who was able to create believable characters who were "warts and all" human.

I just watched it for the first time today. I fell in love with it before the movie finished. It's up there as one of my favorites. The movie reminds me of one of my other favorites, "Beautiful Girls".

Yeah it's out on DVD. It has a lot of big name actors in it. Oddly enough Pruitt Taylor Vince is in both of them, a tie to both movies. You won't be disappointed.

When you get a chance to see "Beautiful Girls" let me know what you think of it. I'm curious to see if you like it.

I hope you find it.

Just did a Cool Hand Luke/Nobody's Fool double feature. That same restless spirit... and the way that acts with family members is so perfect. It's slightly painful to see his great smile lose its teeth (literally) in this film, but his face is still just perfect. Possibly better than Brando's.
