I always thought it strange, too. He also didn't appear in any of the advertising. I presumed he only had a cameo and, when I first saw the movie in theaters way back when, I was shocked to see he had a fairly large and key role. At that point in his career, Bruce Willis was known almost exclusively as an action star and presumably, the producers underplayed his role in the credits and the marketing so there would not be any confusion regarding the nature of this movie. I am just kind of shocked the Bruce Willis was so willing to accept that. He was a rather big star at the time. I can totally understand him taking a smaller role in an independent flick just because it was such a great role and great movie, not to mention a chance to work with Paul Newman, but that didn't mean he had to do it almost anonymously.
