Like Nobody's fool, Empire Falls was based on a novel by Richard Russo. They both take place in small towns but Paul Newman is not the main character. The story is a bit deeper and Ed Harris is the star. It is one of Newman's final roles and of course he was as good as ever.

Yes, I agree! If you like Nobody's Fool, you will like Empire Falls. Newman is a joy to watch. I rented Empire Falls when it came out on DVD, then immediately bought a copy and have watched it several times.
