Why R?
Reasons for it being rated R?
shareThe nudity and the F word. When Newman, describing his father, says, "*beep* him eternally".
shareToby's funbags are one reason to be sure, but i dont think you can use the "F" word more than once and still get a PG13 rating. The "*beep* him eternally" and one of the funniest lines "Raimer shut the *beep* up" are the only 2 i can think of, but thats enough i guess.
shareWhy does it matter? It affects no one over 17

i thought the strippoker scene was a bit too much (burlesque) for this gentle film. Melanie's 2 seconds were fine. ;)
share....Somehow I think if it was strip poker, Carl and his new secretary wouldn't have been the only ones missing articles of clothing. I like the idea that Carl put up her clothing, an action quite in keeping with his character.
....BTW, I still kinda prefer the ol' 34" Melanie(s) to the newer 36" model(s).

....That's right! Forgot about that item. I think the police chief even put up his revolver at one point.
A strange scene indeed with the police chief asleep, two naked people and the lawyer betting his leg, while others were using money.
How much is a wooden leg worth, I wonder ?

Good way to phrase it, but I'll go even a little farther. I have loved this movie for many years; have re-watched it many times. But I have always felt that the nudity (and some of the language) are unnecessary and don't fit in with what is otherwise such a gentle movie.
shareIt barely makes it to an R... just enough nudity and just enough of the f-word. More importantly, the rating is irrelevant. If the producers had any interest in a lower rating, they could have had it with minimal effort and without changing the movie (and, without losing that wonderful shot of Melanie Griffith). Even with the brief nudity, this is not a movie that is going to be interesting to anybody under the age of 18.... and probably not to too many people under the age of 48 (although I saw it first at the age of 28 and loved it).
