What's with the low rating?

This is a wonderful little film with a classic Paul Newman performance and some superb supporting performances. I remember everyone being enchanted by this movie when it came out, as it was about real people.

I know it deserves more...much more..even Newman deserved the Oscar win over Forrest Gump..there have been many actors playing mentally ill people but av never seen a convincing old man with regrets everyday character as this. PERFECT performance with every facial expression and slightest move of his eyebrows sending vibes of emotions across the screen and into the audience. An all time classic.period.

It somehow slipped under the radar. I don't think many people know about it. Bruce Willis has another one of those with In Country... (which I haven't seen yet, but I want to!)

I guessed this wd be rated at about 6.4, so 7.2 is very over-rated in my mind. All the characters, aside from Newman's, seem very thin and stereotyped, and just used to furthier an unimaginative plot. No character is full and Newman's is too stupidly condescending--it's he who leads the unkind digs at certain town squares.

The "raw scores" are higher. But in the ridiculous wisdom of imdb, the final score gets "massaged" a bit lower. Happens to a lot of good movies.

And certainly, the younger set won't rate this very highly. No match for chop em up suey pictures.

I don't think 7.2 is a very low rating for IMDb, at least for an 18-year-old film. The largest bloc of voters gave this 8s or 7s, which is what I gave it.

I remember going to see the movie at least two times at the cinema during the same period as another, at that time, underrated and underperforming film which I also saw several times. The Shawshank Redemption.

I can clearly recall sitting in an empty auditiorium (while Speed etc where selling out next door) thinking "Time is going to tell on these picutres. People will be talking about Shawshank and Nobody's Fool for decades."

Disappointed that Nobody's Fool has not enjoyed the same delayed praise that Shawshank has.

reply

I think Shawshank is the more powerful movie to be honest.

Nobody's Fool is a gem though.

I enjoyed Paul Newman in 'The Verdict' as well.

7.4 is a very respectable score, anything really above 7 is usually a decent film. 8 and up is for the films like Saving Private Rayan, Pulp Fiction, or Shawshank. Now, for me, it's a 10, but for a movie that most people don't even remember (sadly) 7.4 isn't bad.
