Is this a true story?

And are there real cases like this where a person never met anybody else but their parents? Just like "Return of the Blue Lagoon"?

reply

I've heard from a lot of people that it was but I can't confirm it. It does seem likely that this could be true. I live in North Carolina and I never remember hearing anyhting about it though. The cabin where it was filmed in Fontana Lake is still open to tourists, haven't been to it yet but I will likely go next year!

Who in Return to the Blue Lagoon never met anyone but their parents? The kids raised on that island were on a few boats as young babies but I guess they probably don't remember it. But later some others did come to the island and invited them to adjust to normal society...they chose not to.

This movie is loosely based on a case in the early 70's. A girl, given the name "Genie" to protect her identity was isolated in a room in california. From the age of 20 months to 13 years old, the only contact she had was with her 50 year old mother and her brother. She was tied to a chair and had limited use of her arms and legs. Her mother left her husband, and this led to Genie being hospitalized. social scientists and doctors studied Genie, and learnt that she could not stand erect, speak, dress, or feed herself. They slowly taught Genie to string together two or three word phrases, and showed her the world she had never seen. Her mother tried to sue the hospital and took Genie away. Not much else is known after this period.

This movie isn't based on Genie at all. Nell is an entire different case. We just watched this movie in Sociology this week because we were studying feral children. We studied 3 cases (Isabelle, Genie, and Anna) Nell wasn't based on any of these. It is based on a true story but I'm not sure that everything that happened in the movie to her happened to her in real life (ie. the boys in the pool hall) But she is still alive and has progressed to a competence and social level of an adult. Nell is also still living in the same woods and there are no roads leading to her house. At first the public was pretty crazy about it but now the story is old news and they leave her alone and let her live her life. In the case of Genie she never got passed a 3rd grade social level.

For legal purposes, the film credits say "the events, characters, and firms depicted in this photoplay are fictiotious. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or to actual events or firms is purely coincidental."

Of course, this could just be for legal purposes. Who knows what the writers heard when they thought up the story?

There was a story 3-4 years ago, about a boy discovered in Russia, the Ukraine, or something, who had apparently been left alone as an infant in the woods and was raised with wolves or wild dogs. The boy moved about on all fours, and acted completely like a dog.
