Did this happen to you?

Not to take anything away from this film, which I really enjoy, I was just wondering if anyone else did the same thing as me--which is, walking around for two weeks after basically bugging the crap out of friends and family by saying "Missa Chickabee" all the time. Anyone?

reply

No, I didn't do that. But every time someone said they wanted something I'd say, "Jay, Jay, waaa, waaa" and stretch my arms out. Yeah, they think I'm crazy.

What does Chickabee mean? And was that her daughter at the end of the movie? It looked a lot like Nell.

"Quid Pro Quo, Doctor"
"Well Clairice. Have the lambs stopped screaming yet?"

reply

After I watched that, I kept on saying "Tay in the way." continuously. My boyfriend got annoyed. And I kept on going " May, Tay, May, Tay".

reply

Oh, yes, indeed, "Nell-Speak" took me over for a bit! "Doe-na kay, missa chickabee" was my instant responce when someone was upset. LOL "Ev-a-duh" were people who p*ssed me off, "skoo-inna-bay" was sex...I inundated for awhile. I still pull out a "ta-ay inna wee-in" when it's a pretty day and the wind's blowing. ;-D

At least you didn't have your MOM reevaluate your speech therapy soon after the movie came out, like mine did. It was totally embarassing.

I think tha Chickabee means loved one. Dr. Lovell translates it during the trial at the end. And I'm not sure, but I think the girl is Jerry and Paula's daughter.

reply

I watched the movie a while ago and me and my sister still say tay-in-da-weein all the time and hold our arms out. Since the movie isn't that well known, no one really knows what we're talking about. It's a little joke betweeen us sisters. It's also an oppurtunity to tell people about the movie.

I had a couple of friends who took Nell's language out of the theater with them, even elaborated upon it enough to have conversations in it.

I know a man from Illinois who has a language like Nell's with his slightly older sister. The film was very moving to both of them.

My dad knew a pair of twins with a language like that and a little ditty they used to sing. He still remembers and sings it.

reply

Please tell me more about the people your dad knew, and the words to the song. I just saw this movie for the first time last night. Is there a book
written ? Is this based on a true story?

reply

My dad's friends were probably in either eastern Kentucky or somewhere in Montana. I can ask him the words to the song.

There is a novelization of the movie which is based on earlier shooting scripts, and some of the language in the book is not the same as what you'll hear in the film. The film is loosely based on Mark Handley's play 'Idioglossia'.

Well, it took me long enough, but here it is!

"Oooo me ca oh ti erl ti go ti me tie corti in my coppeo."

Ohhhh, I don't care where in the world I go
as long as I have cream in my coffee.

The melody is taken from a folk song called "Sugar in my Coffee."

The girls were not twins but sisters, and they used to drive their little brother crazy with this stuff.

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!
