Was Nell happy at the end of the movie?

Would people here say the movie had a happy ending? Nell seemed happy...but the last shot is of her sheding a tear. What do people here think? I'd hate to think such a wonderful lady had an unhappy ending. Maybe it was bittersweet?

I think bittersweet is a good word for it, yes. Jodie Foster's commentary talks about how Nell will always live alone and be something like a "maiden aunt" figure.

Let's just say that God doesn't believe in me.

I think she was happy. She got to stay in her home, and had alot of friends who loved her. The party at the end was for her birthday, which was of course her twin's birthday too. Jerry's daughter on the rocks reminded her of May, so she was crying because she was sad that May couldn't be there to enjoy it with her. At least that's how I saw it.

Excellent insight, timberwolf. That's sort of how I see it now. The ending sort of depressed me so I just wanted to be reassured.

I dont know, I hope so.

Ozy (well, I used to be)

And I stood where I did be; for there was no more use to run; And again I lookt with my hope gone.
