Nell knew exactly where in the Bible to turn to point out a passage she wanted to Jerry to read. She even directed him to the exact verse. In other words, she knew how to read. Her culture was different because of her upbringing, but Nell was as bright as everyone else around her.

...I don't think she knew how to read. The passage was bookmarked and she probably knew from watching her mother where to start.

I always got the impression that she could read, just wanted Jerry to read to her as Violet had.
