Jodie Foster was panned by many critics for her performance. Why?

I though it was a great performance and I'm glad the oscars took notice.

And she didn't make the classic mistake of going "full retard".

Man, NOBODY goes "Full Retarded"...

Please stop with the "full retard" comments. They are offensive.

reply

Um, there hasn't been a comment about how Jodie Foster (wisely) didn't go full retard in months.

Again, I find the term and idea of "full or half retard" offensive. I have a niece who has Down Syndrome. Please thank about how your terms might offend people.

"Full Retard" is in reference to a fictitious 2nd-rate character actor (Imagine Dustin Hoffman + tom Cruise as a single person) who does a movie that is melodrama crap like Forest Gump - but goes way beyond. That what is meant.

Retard depending of context isn't insulting. Its being overly sensitive. Like calling a black person "black" who prefers to be called "African American". Eventually there will come a time when Down Syndrome becomes a dirty word. Its why I hate the phrase "pre-owned cars", come on - the word "USED" is good enough.

The word "Retarded" wasn't designed to be insulting, but used to describe a person with mental problems. There are all kinds, so it fine.

Now I mean no insults to people with mental disabilities. Theres all kinds and yes, some of them are not actually retarded. Like the women who can't walk or talk unless she's running or walking backwards because of an allergic reaction to medication. Very sad.

But the word can be purposely insulting. Certain people in politics are retards, morons and plain stupid that have no business running for office, worse yet is anyone who thinks THOSE people are the smart ones.

Look up the actress from family guy who played a Down Syndrome character. She's funny and has a good outlook. I'm laughing with her because she actually understands humor. I respect her for such insight.

Piss off. While the commenters may be jerks, YOU do NOT have the right to stifle them.

I agree. While it wasn't my favorite role, I feel she deeply loved this character and put everything she had into it. And if she was Oscar baiting, then so is every actor that decides to do anything noteworthy. Don't they all want the Oscar? I think she fell in love with this story and wanted to tell it. Actors have to take these kinds of risks. Roles like these can resonate or fall flat with critics. The first time I watched it, I was younger and thought of it as a joke. But after watching it again, I realized she was very careful with her acting choices. She wasn't just running around like a wild animal. She wasn't just a kid stuck in an adult's body. She didn't need to be tamed and I think Jodie presented that very well.

She deserved the Oscar - and Nell wasn't retarded.

"Wow, entertainers AND dancing girls? Is there a buffet as well?"

reply

Critics are basically jerks. That's why they CRITICIZE, they can't DO.

Yes JF was great in the film.

Actually it was just the opposite. She was generally regarded as having contributed a really good performance.

Just saying what I believe to be true.

I personally didn't like it and thought it was one of those roles purely designed with oscars in mind.
