Only a 6.3...why such a low rating?
The movie is tremendous. I don't get why the rating is so low? Any ideas?

I have no answer for you.
In some respects I feel like Nell. Why? Because this charmer was released in 1995 and I just got around to watching it today for the first time...even though it sat on my HD for about 6 months before I decided to open it.
All I can say it was a wonderful movie well worth the time I spent enjoying it.
Prior to watching this gem I had no idea of the back story. As I watched Liam and Natasha work together I had no idea they were married to each other. That would explain the love I sensed between them as I watched them at work. And to learn that Natasha passed recently..well it took some of the good feelings I just experienced while watching Nell. My heart goes out to Liam and his boys.
OP, I agree the rating for this movie is way to low.
Several of the people contributing to the rating score (if the score is compiled from user ratings, I am not sure where the rating comes from exactly) seem to have formed a dislike of the ga-ga aspect of the Nell´s dialogue in the film.
I wonder if the film could have been improved by being built around both identical twins as adults (i.e. no death of one twin in childhood). To me it is not quite balanced healthy human bahaviour for a person living by themself to talk to themself or to a mirror, in any language. But that is what Nell does in the film.
The point is that it was balanced and healthy for Nell. It kept her from losing her mind. It's a terrible thing to lose a twin. The whole point of this movie is all value judgements have to be put aside. The doctors have to see Nell as she is, not as they want to see her.
The reason people vote this film down is the first reason you guessed, they can't get into the language, and it probably disturbs/frightens a good many of them. Plus the fact that there are two strong women leads in this picture, and that it's a very emotional story with a lot of subtlety. It is really almost an art film, and art films don't usually get high ratings.
You've got me?! Who's got you?!
And why--after all these years--are there less than 15,000 user votes. A film this compelling deserves much more attention than it's gotten.
Movie contains a minimum 30 percent post-consumer content.
I cannot believe I just now discovered this movie. 20 years later and I am just now watching this, thanks to Netflix. Nice to come across a really good movie like this. Maybe it just was not promoted to everyone in all parts of the world.
shareI saw this movie in the theater when it first came out, and can tell you that the majority of the audience didn't sit through the whole thing, and were laughing at Nell's language and the attempts at learning it. It was like being in an audience full of ignorant bullies. No one "got" it.
