The state tried to imprison her in a mental institution

Remember the trial where the state tried to imprison her in a mental institution even though she was clearly not insane? If it wasn't for the main character, she would have been locked up for the rest of her life. Doesn't this forced imprisonment bother anyone else?

Extremely.

Actually, the state didn't want to imprison her; a group of doctors did. Other than that, you've identified the core message of the film.

You've got me?! Who's got you?!

I kind of found the last act the least convincing part of the movie.

A judge sets the 2 doctors up out there for 3 months to gather evidence to enable him to make the appropriate decision.

Then in a contrived situation, it seems those closest to Nell aren't being listened to, whilst doctors who weren't part of the original observations are, leading to Nell, coming out so to speak in court.

In addition, when she was being observed and they were waiting for her to behave like she did at home--which would be totally unexpected in the first place--why couldn't they show all the films they took of her when she WAS at home? That doesn't make sense to me--then again, they wouldn't have a movie.
