The people are horrible, she’s not ugly or fat or anything. She was lovely as she is. The film seems to enjoy making her seem ugly. She definately wasn’t and was just a normal girl who had a bad upbringing with a disgusting father, disgusting so called friends and no encouragement from anybody. I felt sorry for her and I liked her.
shareYes, you had the exact reaction that the director hoped you would. You're not really supposed to sympathize with any of the grotesque characters here, other than Muriel, Rhonda and Muriel's mum. The wedding itself was supposed to be one big joke. There was no love involved and the ceremony only served to show the audience that Muriel was chasing the wrong dream. It's no coincidence that she ends up single and happy with her best friend by her side.
