David and Muriel (spoilers)

I was surprised that David was so amicable and accepting of Muriel's decision to leave him. Even if he understands, it puts him in a terrible position -- his being able to compete in the Olympics rides on him being married to an Australian. And then she wishes him good luck in the Games? Hasn't she just ruined his chances to even GO to the Games?

Yeah, I wondered about that, ... but maybe the marriage had served its purpose somehow? Otherwise, I think he was just a pretty good guy in the end :)

These things, I think, don't "not make sense" - the first question: well, things often just go that way, it probably originated when they didn't know Muriel that well yet, or perhaps they just kind of grew apart... the second: they were close friends, even in such extreme circumstances that may take a short while to break down entirely... both of these are very valid, psychologically intuitive explanations I think. As for the last question: the guy she was marrying was quite famous and there was a lot of interest in his future performance in the world of swimming, and by extension in his personal life.

Well the first time they met the coach explained how they only needed to live together for 4 months after they get married.

But I don't think they did live together for 4 months after they got married, so we're back to the original question of why David was OK with Muriel leaving him.

We don't really know how much time passed from the time they got married until she left.
