I wonder if it's considered unethical..

...to commit suicide after having a life as horrible as the mother had.

reply

I think only Catholics have a problem with suicide.

But that was the one bit of this film I had trouble with when I first saw it. To me it was just completely out of place in a film that was marketed as a comedy. But on further viewings it is an important point in the story and it is balanced. (And I have learnt to ignore the gushing hype in film advertising.)

not every comedy has to be jim carrey style,if you look at the classic comedies like 'cheers' it had quite a tragic ending,'mash' too had a tragic ending.

reply

Not true. Nearly every major religion considers suicide to be deeply unethical.

except for Islam and suicide bombers

''except for Islam and suicide bombers''

very intolerant ignornant statement, 1st of all the bombers are extremists and are in a minority, they do not represent what islam religion is about nor the majority of people in the islam faith.

Yes, Muriel's Wedding was marketed as a comedy, but the one poster above is right. A lot of great comedic movies have dramatic moments. After all, what would a great story be without a big climax? Also, Bill calling his family useless throughout the movie, Muriel constantly calling herself nothing and Rhonda getting spinal cancer are not meant to be comedic. This movie isn't 'Jackass', which is meant to be funny througout. I would more call it a 'dramity'...a word my friend uses.

'dramity' is a familiar common term used by many critics, journalists and fans now across popular culture for ages, not just exclusive to your friend.

Oh sorry. I've only ever heard him use it.

Did you mean "dramedy", as in Drama + Comedy?

reply

yea i meant dramedy.

reply

Oh really????? First, you're straying off topic. We are talking about the movie, not Islam. Secondly, still waiting to see that 'majority' stage huge protests against that little minority.

reply

well just because the majority don't react or protest it does not mean they condone it. I'm an irish catholic republican and don't react when the ira bombs the protestants/loyalists or the British but i still do not condone such terrorism and bloodshed. Just because i don't protest against it does not mean i support it in any way so your point is kinda moot. The majority of people are non political and want to live in peace.
