Jeanie Drynan

How did she not get recognised for her performance? Toni Collette, Rachel Griffiths and Bill Hunter all do fanstastically in this film yet Jeanie Drynan, who played Muriel's mother did a fantastic job, actually made a background character one of the most tragic in the film yet got no recognition?

Agreed rh86!

This is a beautiful, poignant performance.

The look on her face as she sees Muriel's new husband address that harridan Diedre, as Mrs Hyslop after the wedding ceremony, and Muriel (self-obsessed creature that she is) doesn't even correct him, is utterly heart-breaking!

The lack of recognition is completely fitting with the character, isn't it?

It was definitely one of the most moving performances in the film.

Her daughter is an actress too.

It was remarkable and authentic acting. Very understated and powerful. In some ways, her role seemed the most acutely portrayed, simply because her range of emotions is so limited and constrained. An excellent portrayal of a depressed and beaten woman. Heartbreaking.

I am watching the movie again now for WOW....forgot the count many years ago. LOVE this movie. a FEEL good movie, but it is heartbreaking every time I see Muriel's mother cry/sob at the wedding. All the mother did was try and make her husband and family happy with nothing returned. You just want to choke the whole family for how they treated her. I am sure there is a post for this already, but saw YOUR post rh86 regarding JEANIE DRYNAN. SHE IS a great actress and although I am only familiar with a few roles she has done, I do recognize that she is an incredible actress!!!!! Wish her and her family the best and "I" along with others will remember for her sympathetic and dramatic role in Muriel's Wedding.

Her character in this movie is so heartbreaking. The actress plays so well a person that has been slowly and gradually beaten down by life, forgotten and not appreciated. I kept wishing throughout the film that SOMEONE would see how depressed and lonely she really is and listen to her and offer her help and advice but she is seen as a nobody just like Muriel and no one gives her the time of day. That scene where she takes the shoes because her last pair are so worn out and gets caught by that b**** that sees her do it makes me so sad every time and especially the scene after her husband leaves for the last time and after going off on her son is crying in the kitchen is so heartbreaking and like other people have said on her just makes you want to reach out and give her a hug. On another note the actress is quite beautiful like others mentioned and there is one picture I found of her with short black hair and she almost has an Audrey Hepburn look to her.

Thank you for the reply. I own a video store and watch "Muriel's Wedding" often. There are so many heart wrenching scenes with the mother....the ones you mentioned 'jlprizm86', but that one scene at Muriel's wedding.....felt like her mother went out of her way to get to the wedding on time, sat in the back, and never noticed. The one time in the movie I wanted to slap EVERYONE including Muriel. Thank you so much for the reply and the other information on the mother. Have a great day! Thank you again! Ken

Fantastic actress and I agree, the outstanding performance in the film. Tragic.

I know, her character made me want to cry so hard. How on earth could she not get recognised for that?
