Bad Teeth

Is it just me or do they all have incredibly bad teeth?

reply

It's just you.

reply

No it isn't just you. I thought the same thing!

The problem is we've all become used to the fake, bleached, plastic looking Hollywood teeth, so any teeth that are not perfect, straight, symmetrical and pure white will seem to be bad. They are just normal looking, real, human teeth, that in most cases don't even deserve to be straightened or whitened, as they are good enough. That's all.

reply

Well said M harriague-1. Just what I thought. Give me normal looking teeth any day over those fake ones that just aren't what normal people have. Makes me laugh when you see films where they're supposed to be poor, or living in the wild and they still have perfect straight white teeth. Look around folks - how many people really have the Hollywood smile?

Ingrid Bergmann was quite famous for this in her own time.
When she was hired for her first Hollywood productions, she outraged everyone by not changing her name, and not letting her eyebrows to be reshaped, her teeth straightened and artificially whitened.
She only managed to keep her now famous "innocent and natural" look because of her strong personality.

reply

I always found that odd because I thought Ingrid had a great smile and teeth.

I'm not sure if it's a Hollywood thing, but some of the people in the movie did have bad teeth, OP. I think it's unfair when people say it's because your brainwashed by Hollywood - I grew up around people with great teeth/smiles. It's not hard if you take care of them.

I masturbate a lot

I agree, a lot of the characters did have bad teeth (even Tania the beauty). And its not just a matter of cosmetics--bad teeth can cause or be a sign of health problems. Still, seeing the movie was about ordinary people, the unaligned or discoloured teeth did add a touch of realism.

reply

I personally love all the real, un-Hollywood teeth. Rachel Griffiths has definitely had some major dental work done since this film.

reply

No, it's because people are lazy excuse-making idiots who think they need to "be snobs like in hollywood" to have white teeth...That's the problem.

Not everyone has great pearly whites. It's called "welcome to the real normal life of people". Most of us have not so straight/off-white teeth. I, myself, don't have perfect teeth. Be glad there's a movie where realistic people are the characters instead of the fakes you see in most movies/in hollywood.

I think this is something Americans notice more. Not that Australians or Brits or anyone else in the western world doesn't have access to braces, but it's just way more common to have done in the U.S. than anywhere else. That's just my understanding, though.

One thing I did notice, though, is that all the younger girls they showed seemed to have the exact same bad teeth. They all had the center teeth slightly turned in and all seemed to be the same yellow color. My bet is that they gave all the younger girls copies of the exact same set of falsies to wear that made them look more working class or from a tourist town.

reply

I never really noticed it. I think people have been conditioned to think glowing white straight teeth are healthy/normal and slightly yellow/angled teeth are not by watching too many hollywood smiles on tv. Most actors do not have their original teeth, and yellow crooked teeth can be healthier than white straight tones as long as they're not rotten. Although saying that, i do think Americans get more aesthetic dental work than Australians and Brits and have higher amounts of fluoride in their water for whiteness.

reply

Just you.

reply

I didn't think they had bad teeth at all. Their teeth looked normal to me, granted they weren't perfect pearly whites, but they weren't bad either.

reply

Not all of their teeth were that bad. Of course, the popular "pretty" group of girls were the ones with the nicest teeth.

reply

Just you. Real people have real teeth.

Americans seem to be obsessed with totally artificial looking teeth.

reply

artificial ridiculously white teeth are known the world over as american teeth-a nation obsessed! lol
