What role does the character of Jack Duff play in this film and how often does he appear?

He appears several times. He's Cole's henchman that arranges for the fired Santa to set Kris up with the fake attack scene, hence his trial, etc. Earlier he does the investigating/spying on Kris when Cole first gets wind of his popularity.

In fact, I announced at Thanksgiving that I had plans to watch it (since this version was supposed to be on and not the '47) and got mad and shut it off when it wasn't the right one.
My family said, "What's the difference, other than the actors?"
To which I replied, "The actors make all the difference!"
