One truly good remake

Remakes just don't ordinarily have the quality of the original, and this has been remade several times. However this version with Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle and Mara Wilson as Susan is captivating and nearly as good as the original.

I've heard that reaction from others, Kruger. I certainly don't get that feeling though...what do you others think???

People are quite divided on this and I do consider the original as THE one to see, but this is one to check out and see whether you like it or not. I'm one who did like it.

It bugs me now, mainly because sky don't seem to have realised that it's a CHRISTMAS film, and have it on ALL BLOODY YEAR ROUND!!! And my mum is one of those people who has to watch it every single time it's on...

Actually, I'm one of those people who has to watch this movie when it comes on! This and the book "Yes Virgina there is a Santa Claus absolutely cements Christmas."

reply

no, it's great.

I guess I'm the loner one here because I love the 1994 version and actually HATE the 1947 version. Maybe it's because I grew up on the 1994 one, I didn't see the 1947 one until two years ago. I couldn't even sit through all of it I hated it so much.

reply

Well CoolMoviesFan, if you loved this 1994 remake and "hated" the original 1947 movie, let me tell you something. I generally watch remakes to see how they stack up to the original movie and I agree, this is one of the best remakes of a classic movie out there. PLEASE!!! Whatever you do, do not see the 1978 version of this movie, that is if you can find it. It's a waste of time.

Scarface is a remake?

heres some more for your list.

King Kong

reply

Yes, Scarface is a remake! The original was more faithful to the real Al Capone story. The Capone references are almost completely lost in the remake/update.

Oh, I'm ready for it. Come on, bring it! -Cobra Starship, Snakes on A Plane

> The remakes which surpass the original are The Fly and Scarface.

There are others.

The Humphrey Bogart / Mary Astor / Sidney Greenstreet / Peter Lorre version of The Maltese Falcon is a remake.

His Girl Friday with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell is the second version (of four) of a movie based on the play "The Front Page", and is much better than the first one (or the third or fourth ones, for that matter).

Of course, there are always debates about which of the various movie versions of several Shakespearean plays are the best.

reply

I actually like this one better than the orginal, I always have to watch it at Christmas time

reply

I agree too, this is one of the best remakes. Though there are some differences in the storyline, I think that was intentional because they wanted to be different while remaining true to the theme of love and peace.

Great remake, I love them BOTH. :)

reply

Too many people fall into the trap that if they love one, they must hate the other. This simply isn't so...!

I love both versions, they both have their magical qualities and strong points.

reply

I have seen this film many times and it seems like I have to watch it every single year. Gee, I practically grew up with it!

I haven't seen the remake yet and I will very soon. But I doubt I'll like it as much as this one. But I've heard very positive things about it. We'll see.

I think they are both great, I make an effort to watch both every year. Along with my other favs: A Christmas Carol, Christmas Vacation and It's a Wonderful Life.

The remake is a pretty good movie. It's one of the few remakes that actually doesn't seem like just a tired retread of the original. The original Miracle on 34th Street is better, but Richard Attenborough makes a good Santa, and was perfect for the part. The two movies are similar in many ways, but different enough to make both enjoyable, and both stand out for different reasons.

reply

I still like the innocence of the original one best. But this is a really good remake, with a much darker edge. It stands on its own and is well worth watching.

I'm not questioning you really because I never sat through all the first one, but I'm curious what was darker in this one.

Well, it was less idealized and there was a true villain in this one..The "villain" in the first one, the psychologist, was really cartoonish...The Santa that was fired in this version was malevolent, insinuating pedophilia against Kris. And Kris's attack on him was because he was outraged for himself, while in the first it was because of the boy Albert. And His attack was more brutal.

Dorie was more realistic as a single mother...Not always as together and in control. The guy wasn't as sunny and altruistic as the original either. It just struck me as a darker story.

There was a remake of It's a Wonderful Life with Marlo Thomas that i felt was darker than the original too.

reply

I definitely agree. This version is too dark for me too. Attenboro has rodent-like teeth, and seems almost vengeful. I don't like how Hughes uses violence to get a laugh too. (It seems to be a trademark in all of his films, and it always turns me off.)

reply

I really enjoyed both versions and have them both on DVD. I try to watch them during the Christmas season which for me begins on November 1st. I believe I lean toward the remake as my favorite.

I absolutely LOVE the original. I saw it for the first time a few years ago.

Then, about 3 days after I saw the original, I was watching CBC, and saw this movie. I thought to myself, "This looks awfully familiar". It was the 1994 remake.

Normally, I am scared to watch a remake of a movie ("Charlie & The Chocolate Factory). To be quite honest, the remake of "Miracle on 34th Street" isn't too bad.

I love the remake much better than the original...which is funny, because I usually go for the original. It's a Wonderful Life is one of my favorite holiday movies, and when we watched it this year (in the new colorized version my Mom bought) it was weird. But I just love this movie because it always makes me cry when Mrs. Walker is walking through the crowd and hearing Kris' voice say something like, "I'm a symbol..."

Anyway, just my two cents :)

reply

I don't understand how anyone could like this remake better then the original. Santa actually hits a guy with his cane in this version! While the guy was saying bad things to him, Santa would never hit someone with his cane like that! From there the whole film goes downhill with the guy falling to the ground and all that with the court.

Santa would never knock a guy to the ground with his cane! He would never cave into someone calling him names in a setup for violence.

John Hughes made great movies but this is not one. Are you sure you people watched the original well? I'm guessing lots of people just remember seeing it a bit but remember this one more.

I too prefer this one to the original. The original wasn't believable at all, the relationship between the adults that were supposed to be in love was laughable... they never even seemed to be interested in each other and the next minute they're married.

The psychologist was an insult, completely cartoonish as someone accurately stated, and the fact that Santa didn't actually DO anything was like a total absence of conflict.

Attenborough, on the other hand, actually seemed somewhat human and made a mistake - he wasn't perfect - which in my opinion is a great way to portray him. The only supposed 'perfect' being out there is God, right, so why couldn't Santa have 'sinned' himself just like the rest of us, and then repented? I think it was a great call on behalf of the screenwriter to add this part.

Anyway, I just started watching this again, as the Xmas season is just beginning!
