Anybody notice the HUGE inside joke??

I really can't take credit for it, my 10 year old caught it, Macy's wouldn't
allow its name for use in the movie, so whats the name of the store?
Cole as in when your bad, your getting Coal for Christmas.

Can't be a coincedince.

Another possible inside joke... The bit where Santa does a greeting for "Good Morning America". David Hartman was in the 70s remake of Miracle on 34th St., before settling into his best known role as anchor on Good Morning America

reply

That's not really a "joke". It's a cameo.

reply

I think it probably is a coincidence... honestly, if someone actually THOUGHT of that "joke" they need to be fired.

reply

Yeah, You're right....HUGE!!

reply

Good one! Pretty smart for a 10 year old child. Good for her!!

reply

yeah you are right, i bet his 10 year old daughter knew that macy's corporation didnt allow its name to be used in this movie, then when she saw it was named cole's she figured the movie was showing an inside joke in saying macy's gets a lump of coal......yeah because 10 year olds usually ask around before seeing a movie, 'hey did macy's give them naming rights for this film????'.....any1 else see what im saying??? yeah a 10 year old could say cole = lump of coal....but why would a 10 yr old know, or even care, about macy's naming rights..and its not like it was a big story going around...fox news alert : macys denies its name being used in miracle on 34th street!.....so i find that story a little far-fetched..in fact ill say its a complete fabrication....actually this isnt MY opinon, my 10 yr old son told me to say it

Jebus, you are a real tool. I hope you you don't have a ten year old child. Perhaps you mean yourself as the ten year old? Also, capital letters are really nice. Try some punctuation sometime.

You know, the guy could have been telling his daughter about the Macy's-not-giving-permission-thing just randomly, and then she could have thought of the Coles-coal connection from that pretty easily...

reply

The name of the department store is C. F. Cole's. In Australia, there was a real life, but no longer existing, nickel and dime store chain called Coles, operated by G. J. Coles & Co. C & F are four letters down from G & J respectively.

reply

Argh, why do people have to start arguments about nothing on these threads.
Good for your 10 year old, they must be pretty smart:)

reply

I agree with Pasky68, they were just stating something that is seems ironic and could possibly be an inside joke. I've seen the movie every year since i was little and never caught it either.

reply

I think you guys are stretching it...
I don't think it has anything to do with it.

reply

I agree, it's a cute story! Everyone else is being a bit bah humbug!
Even if it's not actually the reason for using it, it's still very clever that the 10 year old picked up on it!

reply

wow. Looks like I'm coming onto this thread about a year (or more) too late, but I just can't believe some of the posters on these imdb boards. What's the point in being sooo unnecessarily NASTY to each other?? I've never understood why people suddenly get soooo tough when they're sitting behind a computer screen. It's FINE to state your opinion on movies, actors, whatever, but to start talking junk to other posters for no apparent reason? Get a life. Seriously.

And by the way - cute idea about why they named it "Coles". Ya never know I guess!! :)

reply

I know it's been forever and a day since you posted this - but Coles does still exist. It's now one of the two largest supermarket chains in Australia, the other being Woolworths.

reply

at 10 years old, my daughter as with all movies, asked "did this really happen?" I had happened to have read the trivia section before the movie, and explained to her that the parade was real, and there really was a department store that ran the parade... and that they wouldn't let their name be used in the movie... she put the rest together.

reply

If that's a purposeful attempt at a "joke", it's a really bad one.

reply

lol You have a wise boy. After all these years I've never caught that.
