I know Luc has said he won't make a sequel just for the sake of it. But I was thinking how new action star Gal Godot and Natalie Portman has similar facial features, so she would pass nicely as a grown up Matilda. That is if there is ever to be a sequel and Natalie Portman has no interest.
For me, I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing the part. I think most would agree that despite the awards that came later in Natalie’s life, Mathilda is still her most notable role. I hoped for a sequel to take place for many years, but I think it’s too late now. The film is still quite popular even today and since so much time has passed I think I would prefer that it stands alone. Natalie’s performance in this film made me a life long fan, if they were to make a sequel I would definitely go see it.
Looking back now, I think Besson made the right choice by not making a sequel. More often than not sequels usually doesn’t live up to ones expectations. This way one can envision Mathilda’s future from their interpretation of her character. Due to Mathilda’s strong will and determination, I’m not so sure her future would’ve been grim.
The one thing that I admire most in Mathilda’s character is the determination in her pursuit of happiness, despite her actions which were often misguided.
