The 'Real' Players

Anyone else notice that some of the fictional players were modeled after actual twins from the mid 90's?

Lou Collins - Paul Molitor
Jerry Johnson - Dave Winfeild
Leon Alexander - Kirby Puckett
Mike McGrevey - Scott Erickson

They didn't hide it well either, Collins was #4 (molitor's #) Johnson was 31 (winfield's) McGrevey was Erickson's 19 etc etc.

They even have light takes on other big leaguers like "blackout" being Goose Gossage, although he was never a twin.

Anyone else notice this?

I just checked and realized this movie came out in 1994, not 1996 like I thought. Please omit the Paul Molitor part because he wasn't a twin until 1996. That is creepy that it seems just like him though

reply

I didn't really see Alexander as Kirby Puckett. I thought he was more like Leon Durham. ;)

I'm just glad they didn't have him miss a ground ball between his legs. He was Bill Buckner before Buckner was. Sometimes it really sucks being a Cubs fan.

Try being a marlins fan. It like they dangle meat in front of your face, let you taste a bite, then sell it to another sap lol.

reply

haha the marlins won a world series in 1997 and 2003 i myself have been a red sox fan since the days of mo vaughn (i was 8 at the time) and saw aaron $#@%^#@ boone ruin our hopes in '03 Just think about how long time fans felt seeing the ball through Buckner's leg and even Bucky @#!&^% Dent. But since the miracle of 2004 i've been pretty happy

reply

I really don't know why red sox fans get so pissed about 2003. Did you not see that world series? The marlins kicked the crap out the yankees, and would have done the same to the red sox that year. Would you rather have finally beat the yankees just to have ur ass handed to you? lol

reply

I don't know about other red sox fans, but I did not watch a single game of that world series. In fact, I really would not have cared if the yankees won. Well, now maybe I would, but aaron boone's homerun managed to knock all sense of baseball out of me for a good month or so.

reply

He did make an error at first during Lou's benching...

reply

I agree with McGrevey and Erickson

I think Jerry Johnson was Randy Bush, same years...and Bush hit .156 in 1993 and was gone

Lou Collins is Kent Hrbek
Lonnie Ritton is Kirby Puckett
Mickey Scales is Chuck Knoblauch

Same types of players...skin color makes no difference

reply

Mickey Scales, I would say is more of a take on Torii Hunter, IMO
If I remember right wasn't Torii Hunter a young rookie in the 1994 season? maybe 1997 not sure?? as they portrayed Scales, although scales is not in the outfeilder (Hunter being a Centerfielder) they portray him a better fielder than a hitter, and Hunter is definitly a better fielder, although Hunter can show streaks of power, just like scales hit the homerun shown in the movie.

reply

Hunter was a rookie in 97, he didnt get an atbat, but played in one game. He was drafted in 1993 in the first round. The Twins also drafted Jason Varitek that year, however he refused to sign.

reply

I thought Collins was modeled after Kent Hrbek, who also wore #4

And I think "Blackout" was actually based on Brad Lesley's actual "Animal" persona from when he pitched in Japan.
