What was the deal with Wedmann?

Not sure if I got the spelling right but what was the deal with the pitcher that the one friend always wants Billy to start? We dont see him until the end , even in the background....are we suppose to believe that a team will use a pitcher who hasnt pitched all season in the seasons most important game?

Apparently lol. Even the Twins announcer says it: "Little-used Bill Weddmann..."

Actually, he had been playing, just not very well. During the scene while Billy and his friends were eating at Mcdonalds, his friend said you should start Wegman, he kills the Rangers. Then Billy replied he kills everybody, thats why hes 3-7. So apparently he was playing, but not in the movie.

Like rahim said, Wedmann pitched but not onscreen.

I get the idea he was a long reliever/spot starter. The fact that his friend kept asking Billy to start him makes me think he mostly pitched out of the bullpen or started when someone else was injured.

The Twins had been on the ropes for four straight games, they had to sweep the Indians in order to force a one-game playoff. The had probably already used up all their good pitchers in the rotation. Plus it can sometimes work to pull a wildcard and put someone that the other team is not familiar with on the mound.

Is everybody sure they're saying "Weddmann"? I figured they were saying "Bill Wegman" who was a pitcher, but played his whole career with the Brewers. Bill went 4 - 14 in the 93 season, so that would add to them saying he didn't have a good record. He didn't play for the Twins, but even if they are saying "Weddmann" it might be a reference to Wegman.
