This subject has been mentioned in more than one post. Though I have not seen Legends Of The Fall in years. So would anybody explain to me just why she could not have children of her own? Was it a biological issue?

In the time period, there was no fertility testing. Some couples could not have children, and they never knew why. Maybe Alfred has a low sperm count.
Alright and a reasonable answer. Also the reason was never explained in
the script. And no wonder that Alfred was so thrilled to watch over
his niece and nephew when Tristan told me he would be going away again!

I don't think it was Alfred, as Susannah had been sleeping with Tristan for a while too and she didn't get pregnant with him either.
I think Susannah was just one of those women who had problems getting pregnant, which is really not uncommon (heck it took my aunt almost ten years of trying before she finally got pregnant) nowadays if you have the money their is the option of fertility treatments or adoption, but back then their was really nothing you could do about it, hence part of her depression.
This is a good movie but I think it is implied that she was unable to get pregnant. After Tristian and Isabel got married, they were popping out kids left and right. And Susannah had been with two men and didn't get pregnant once. It's sad.
shareThey filmed in such beautiful locations and I always thought it was in Montana. However on IMDB it shows British Columbia, Canada. Kinda disappointed. I'll still visit Montana someday.
shareIt was never explained, but I'd say it was her inability to conceive, not Alfred's nor especially Tristan's, since he'd fathered two with Isabel II.
shareI was secretly hoping at one point that Susanna would end up having a fling with Tristan and end up pregnant, thus implying it was Alfred with the fertility issues and as payback for him stealing his girl, lol.
(Although, I honestly did like Alfred. I wouldn't have waited as long as she did for Tristan, and I would have preferred Alfred's stability)
She was waiting for Tristan for many years so I assumed she was just too old.
