MAJOR FLAW with the ending

If the director is trying to give us a pseudo happy ending with Zed riding away scott-free with Zoe, he's overlooked one major thing. As part of their post investigation into the crime, the french police will dust Zed's tool kit to learn who did the actual safe cracking. When that happens, Zed and Zoe's new life together will come to a crashing halt.

reply

While the police would find prints when dusting Zed's equipment, they could only match them to Zed if he had a criminal record, and it is unclear if he had ever been caught before.

reply

Also, I believe Zed was wearing gloves when he cracked the safe.

reply

Also, if they thought they had caught the thieves in the first place - there'd probably be no further investigation. Especially since the money/gold was still at the bank.

reply

i think he has more things to worry about. He kept his mouth open when a raid of cops shot a man with H.I.V. in front of him. Blood was everywhere.

reply

Pretty sure if you pay closer attention to an earlier sequence in the film, he's probably already got HIV.

reply

Please point this out. I have never thought Zed was infected earlier.

reply

Yeah but they'd want to see if they could nail someone for attempted robbery...so they still would have checked it out. He could have been wearing gloves (dont' remember) or they could afterward make him give his prints just in case. Anyway, if they didn't print him just in case and if he wasn't in the database for a past crime, it wouldn't connect the dots to him.

I'm watching it right now & he's definitely wearing gloves, black ones. Plus, he was in the basement 99% of the time they were in the bank, so no one will recognize him, he had his mask on whenever he was around any potential witnesses.

the one thing i thought about, was the cops will say, there was there 8 masks, but only 7 dead robbers. where is the 8th person??

reply

Well, considering that he's an American and they have no idea that an American was working with them, they'll assume it's a Frenchman and he'll probably get away pretty easy. Since he went down into the basement real fast when they first robbed the bank, I'm pretty sure no one will be able to identify him. Only thing could be the prints (if he wasn't wearing gloves), but then they'd need to catch him first and match them up.

2 different "outs" for zed:

1) lots of dead bodies who is not to say that one of the dead wasn't a bandit? they were all dressed in different ways, so it would be hard to tell. this leads to the 2nd one...

2) if anyone was alive that heard that one of them spoke english, and with an english accent, then it would be plausible to blame it on the "ugly" american that was there just to exchange money. the same guy that eric shot.

there were so many dead bodies that most any of them *could* be the missing robber.

reply

well as someone already pointed out, the real flaw with the happy ending is that Zed most likely got AIDS in the final standoff. He had an open wound on his face and blood got all over him.

reply

Well, he would have gotten HIV, not AIDS. People live with HIV for years, even decades, without getting AIDS. Plus it is not "most likely" that he would have gotten HIV. It is possible, though. It is also possible to get immediate treatment for HIV exposure that is fairly effective.

......Actually, it's hinted in Pulp Fiction that "Zed's dead, baby...Zed's dead..." (while Butch was specifically referring to the security guard that Marcellus is going to "get medieval" on with some of his hard, pipe-hittin' people, I believe that Tarantino also meant this as a hint to the fate of Zed from Killing Zoe (possibly Lance's twin brother? ;) )

Why would a U.S. citizen have prints on file in France, since most of the bank robbers were French, it's highly unlikely they would go looking for Zed, all the other robbers are dead, and the police have other cases to solve. There was a bank robbery years ago where i live and all the bank employees were killed, they had a trial for the person they believed committed the crime, who also happened to be a retired cop who had worked at the bank, he was found not guilty, and it's been a cold case ever since.
