Destined to become a classic in the future...

I think this movie will be (and probably already is being) rediscovered as a real gem. I think a lot of viewers and critics didn't understand when it came out that it was a fantasy wrapped inside the old Hollywood styles. The characters are not meant to act, talk or behave in a realistic manner...they are characters OF characters. It's just a shame that a brilliantly crafted, beautiful movie with so many unforgettable scenes just got pretty much ignored when it was released.

I agree. I can't believe that I had never even heard of this movie before a few months ago. Now it has secured a favorable position in my top 10. It is just such a good movie in nearly every aspect!

This movie is awesome from opening to finish, one of my fav Coen bros films along with Raising Arizona and the Big Lebowski.

Agreed, this struck me about the film from the beginning. I think this is my favorite Cohen Bros. film, played to perfection by its cast, and its in my top ten.

The Voices are back... excellent.--Dexter

You're exactly right.

And though I'm sure no one else will agree with me, I hope that Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers both get re-evaluated at some point as the fun gems they are.

It truly is one of the most intelligent comedies out there.

The dialogue and jokes are sharp and quick. I love it.

Definitely. We analyzed this movie on a narrative scale in film theory class with like a 100 people.

...and (mainly) because of this, it reminded me a lot of Terry Gilliam's "Brazil". Or is it just me? Anyone?

This is one of those movies I watch every time I have the chance. It is a classic in my mind. Kind of like 'The Princess Bride' you get it or you don't.

Jennifer Jason Leigh was superb. I love to do the 'fast talking career gal' voice, she inspired me so.

What knockers!
Oh, thank you, doctor.

I have not seen it mentioned here, but the fast-paced dialogue in this film makes me think of the Howard Hawks classic "His Girl Friday" from 1940, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russel, complete with the female reporter trumping all the men. I highly recommend it if you enjoyed this one - available on DVD. Jennifer Jason Leigh may well have modeled her character based on this one.

And the stylized larger-than-life sets at Hudsucker remind me of the surreal sets of an obscure film called "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr.T", a Dr. Seuss story, which shows the perspective of a small child in a strange place - worth watching just to see the sets.

agreed. its flawless

That comparison has never occured to me before, but both films feature outlandish supporting characters moving sure-footedly through a world the bewildered main character seems unable to fully understand.

I thought it was an instant classic since I first saw it at the movies. It holds up after repeated viewing as well. Some people don't get the humor, I think it's great.
