By far ! She was really great in this !

She really gets into the role.

are you kidding?

we were laughing at how awful she was.

I definitely think the over-acting was the part. It was all meant to be a campy party.

I agree with FaceintheCloud, she was great as usual but it wasn't even her best performance of 1994 - just watch "Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle" and you'll see.

"I did cramps the way Meryl Streep did accents" - Calliope (Middlesex)

indeed great performance.

and as for the overacting, seems that this type of acting is made
to resemble 50's era, and is not only jj that have this type of
acting, talking loud and saying pichty words... all the newspaper people got it.

It reminded me of Kate Hepburn roles. How could they think she was awful? I kept listening in admiration while reading the closed captioning to catch what she was saying. She was wonderful!!

By far some of her best work ever. I think she was shamefully overlooked by the Oscars.

Thank you astromuse, I couldn't believe that I read this whole thread and no one had mentioned that JJL was doing Katherine Hepburn through the whole movie. It remnided me a lot of Kate Hepburn in Philidelphia Story, even her word pronunciation was like Hepburn. Oh and by the way I loved the movie. I think it's the BEST Coen Bros. movie.

The trivia said that she was supposed to be like Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday, but she definitely sounded like Katharine Hepburn.

reply

I agree - she made the film for me. It's not often that the funniest character is a woman, and every aspect of her performance was hilarious.

reply

She seems to be shooting for Rosalind Russell in "His Girl Friday" specifically with the speech patterns, but misses the mark with her pronunciations and ends up sounding like Hepburn in the jailhouse scene from "Bringing Up Baby"
What's interesting is that, AFAIK, Hepburn never played this type of role (fast-talking, wise-cracking reporter) If not Russell then Jean Arthur & Barbara Stanwyck would have been better models for it.
