Gerry= Least Likeable Hero of All Time

Is it just me, or is Gerry the least likeable "hero" of all time? I love this movie, but ALL the other campers and characters are either hilarious or endearing, two qualities that Gerry severely lacks. All he does is b!tch about fricken go-karts!!! Maybe he fits in the "so bad it's good" category. Anyway, THIS MOVIE ROCKS!

I think it's cuz he was playing a character uncomfortable with his fatness and all the others were cool with being fat, so thru the movie he became more open to everyone and being fat.

reply

All the other campers are ten times cooler and more likeable.
Cody should have been the main guy.

Gerry obviously was suffering from some kind of emotional devstation. In the brief scenes with his father, we see a cold, hard man who could very well be abusive to Gerry. Poor Gerry barely had a chance in life with an old man like that.

hey, he boned the hot chick. I dont know if that makes him any more likeable

"hey, he boned the hot chick. I dont know if that makes him any more likeable"

Uhh, you're talking about Heavyweights, right?

reply

Does anyone else think his dad looked like Dr. Phil?

reply

Heh, unfortunately I can no longer see Jeffrey Tambor (the actor who played his dad) as anyone else but George Bluth from Arrested Development, though I've seen him in plenty of other things.

reply

I didn't think I was the only one who thought Jeffrey Tambor looked like Dr. Phil.

I kick ass for the Lord!

reply

I half expected Jeffery Tambor to teach Gerry a lesson when he was on the phone with him and be like, I did not send you to go cart camp, and thats why you dont become a fat kid...

reply

LOL @ your signature, Jack! Awesome film.

reply

oh my gosh yes!!
haha he definately looks like dr. phill
I thought I was the only one hahaha

reply

he bitched about the go-karts because his father PROMISED go-karts and good times and was lying the whole time.

reply

oh heavyweights. this whole board had made me laugh so hard. i really need to see this again. and when i was younger, i thought that actually was dr. phil.

"I. DID NOT. SEND YOU. TO. GO-KART CAMP!"

He then beats Gerry severely with a belt for 2 hours. The kid had weight issues. Get off his back. He didnt even get the girl at the end. Hell, he didnt even get the trophy, they through it in the lake and got called cheaters. The Counsel for Inter-Camp Activities's looking into it and they're checking his piss every day 'cause one of the MVPers said he was using anabolic steroids. And Lar's snoring kept him up all night and his mom thinks he's on drugs. HE'S JUST TIRED! LEAVE HIM ALONE! His dance got ruined and they stabbed the blob! Do you know how hard it is to hike for 10 miles uphill? NO!? Well, you know what, if he bitched all summer, he had a damn good reason! And lets not get started on Tim, that sell out *beep*!

The short one's gawking at me and the tall one's being very droll.

He's not as full of life and humor as the other campters, but that's just the reason he makes a good hero, since he's such an everyman. He's relatable, down-to-earth, honest, and he's enduring more emotional pain than anybody. His self-esteem is also alot lower than anybody, which gives him more of an arc.

Aaron Schwartz did a great job.

This could just be my take but in situations like camp I don't recall any of the "hilarious antics" that I achieve. I recall the things like winning the race. But I do recall the "hilarious antics" of my peers, especially if I look up the them (which he clearly did being his first year at camp) He wasn't intended to be the center of every joke at least not in the eyes of the movie. As the main character it is his take on what he sees going on at the camp so just appreciate it for what it is, camp through his eyes.

There's a bullet out there for everyone the trick is to die of old age before it finds you.

Gerry was your johnny everyman, average joe. That's why I think he was the main character.

With a lot of stories, not just this one, there is a character that is supposed to represent the audience. He's not really supposed to be the funniest, most interesting, or anything. Think about most of the "heroes" in movies. A lot of them are just sort of supposed to represent the every man.
