Despicable

This film is part of a disgusting social trend that teaches privileged young boys that they can be as indolent, gluttonous, out-of-shape and obnoxious as they like and society will still be their oyster, because they'll still get a top job and they'll still get to marry the prom queen no matter how stupid or fat they may be.

It's a trend of entitlement that is consistent with the filmography of Judd Apatow (and other white middle-class fratboy filmmakers like Todd Phillips) with respect to films like 'Knocked Up' in which men are happily stuck in a form of permanent adolescence whilst their womenfolk continue to out perform them in every way.

Moreover, the West, particularly the USA and UK is currently facing an obesity epidemic, and films like this that say it's "okay to be very fat" don't help.

PS: I'm not 'fattest', and I'm most definitely not one of those fascists who believe in denying public health care to people who live unhealthy lifestyles (such as overeating, under-exercising, smoking and drinking), but I don't think we should be encouraging obesity as if it's some badge of honour. We shouldn't shame people either, but that doesn't mean we have to celebrate a lack of will-power.

Obviously you didn't bother watching the movie past the human s'more scene.

reply

Yeah, he was too busy raging.

I would always rather be happy than dignified.

Its not saying its ok to be fat, its just saying that if you happen to be fat you might as well go hang out with a bunch of other fat kids and conspire on how to steal food to get fatter.

Not really, when the kids overthrow Tony and Pat throws them an all you can eat night its all to teach them about self control. From then on out the boys focus on building their character and developing their own diets to improve their health, it's not only effective it helps the kids beat the rival camp. But most of all, the movie is about learning to get past what other people think of you and to not let it put a dent on your strengths.

If anything Tony's, methods for weight loss were despicable - He starved them, he had them do a twenty mile hike in the mountains, he ridiculed them, and he forced them to exercise till they collapsed. He only cared about getting more clients and feeding his ego. Stiller did a pretty good job satirizing those type of sluggish people with his performance here, and in Dodgeball, and on his own sketch show in the early 90's. Very over the top, but hey he pretty much summed all those people up at their most extreme.

Sometimes tough love is the best type of love. These kids were OBESE. They needed urgent measures.

Tony's methods were too extreme and would've done more damage than good. It's one thing to diet and exercise, quite another to over-do it all. Plus, he was borderline psychotic.

reply

Also at the end they turn their eating habits around on their own, for themselves and their health. Then because of that, they win the big relay. It's literally the entire ending/point of the movie. Whoever started this thread clearly wasn't able to keep up with this kids movie from the 90s...

I for one was inspired by the resourcefulness and unbreakable will of the young chaps. Honestly would YOU go out into a dark forest in the middle of the night and eat cold cheeseburgers out of a rotting tree stump? Didn't think so. But these boys did, and that's a testament of their dedication to their craft.

reply

Wow this movie isn't supposed to be taken that seriously. It's pretty easy to lose weight in the long term. All you do is just adjust your diet and add some exercises in here or there. They needed a lil kick in the butt to get them in the right direction.

Yo, homie. Is that my briefcase?-Vincent

Fat people with no self control will most likely suffer heart disease and die early. I do not sympathize smokers and drinkers for the same reason.

reply

It's just a fun movie. The only life lesson would be to be who you are and don't change for anybody. You're way too much of a simpleton.

reply

Yes, impose your ideas on someone else because it satisfies you.

It's a movie, lighten up

Oh get over it you whiney imdb troll.
