Questions for Blu-Ray

Hey Heavyweights fans! We are recording the commentary for a new BLU-RAY release on 9/4/12. Wooo! Any questions you want answered or stories told? No guarantees, but you might just hear a response on the BLU-RAY. Start posting! You only have a few days!

Is that you, Lars? :D

Guess I'm really lucky that I dropped by this message board today!

I have some questions:

Could a 'kids' movie like Heavyweights be made in this day and age or is the medium too PC now?

Do you still keep in contact with anyone of the cast aside from recording a commentary?

Did you guys make use of the BLOB a lot when you weren't acting? When I was a kid that was my dream object hahah...

I bet Ben Stiller won;t join the commentary team huh?

Were any of the kid actors scared by your character?

Did any of the fat kids really feel bad about their weight in real life, in between takes?

Any chance of a sequel with YOU and Ben Stiller returning?

Did Ben Stiller improvise any of his lines?

ps: I would find it really awesome if you could mention my name on the commentary, but I understand if you don't want to do that heh.

It's Tom Matena by the way. And thanks a bunch in advance! =)

And tell Judd Apatow this is the best thing he's ever done.

We shall see what we can include. You have some good questions. I think there will only be three of us actors and then Steve and Judd. Should be fun. Have no idea when it will be released, but hopefully there will be some good extras!

Sounds good, man.

Either way, hope you guys have a blast in the commentary room reminicsing the film. Shouldn't be too hard, right? heh

Heavyweights will always be one of my favorite films, not just nostalgia, but it has a timeless quality if you ask me.

I know it's late in the game, but I would be very curious to know if Judd, Steve, and all the actors are aware of how much this movie influenced people over the years. My best friend and I still quote it today, even though we didn't meet until a few years after the film came out (it was actually one of the first things we bonded over). And I'll occasionally hear people mention it out of the blue either in passing or just by quoting a line from it as well. It isn't a film you hear about too much whenever Disney or kids movies are talked about, but it definitely found an audience over the years since the 90s... and a rather large one at that!

On a personal note to Tom (aka: Lars), I don't know if half the stuff you said or did was improvised with Ben Stiller or whatever, since I know you've mentioned it before. But a lot of it still stands up today! My friend and I still quote your character religiously, and I can't really think of many times I've seen my older sister laugh as hard as when you were dancing to "Love Machine" during the dance in the movie. ;)

Excellent. Glad to hear. Steve and Judd really gave us a lot of room with improvising. It's hard to remember now what was scripted and what was improvised. It would be fun to find an old script and compare. They are definitely aware of how much people love Heavyweights. We talked about it during the commentary. Look for the Blu Ray coming this December!

If you're interested in seeing an old script or something along those lines, here's a quick suggestion for you and the other fans on here. Buy the movie tie-in book. I bought it a few years ago and not only is it a quick read, but it had a lot of scenes that either added to what was already in the movie or what I'm guessing was in the original script. It's pretty entertaining though and confirms a lot of what one of the other cast members said was originally filmed and supposed to be in the movie. Pretty cool!

I can't find it on eBay right now, but it appears there's some sellers offering it over on amazon.com. Here's a link to it...

We did record the commentary. It was a blast! I think Judd tweeted a pic that day of the group. Can't believe how different Aaron looks. Gerry Garner is a stud! LOL

Make sure to look for the BluRay come December (a great stocking stuffer for all your pals!).

Now go and give me 100 push-ups.

I had no idea this was coming out until I just listened to an interview with Judd. I quickly did a search and found it came out today. I'm definitely picking this up tonight and checking out all of the bonus stuff.

So I guess I'll have a VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray copy of it.

I appreciate the work that Judd and everybody seems to have put into this release. Thanks.

This release was a GREAT buy!
I spent the last 4 hours watching the bonus features, and listening to the commentary...
Plenty of deleted scenes/alternative scenes...and the REAL scene of Josh saying the famous "Peter Fitz" line!

Check it out!!! It's a MUST for any fan of the film!!

Huge thanks to Apatow/the cast and crew, and for DISNEY for letting half of the jokes/gags slide and putting this great release together...

*Pat having sex with nurse Julie in the boat (deleted scene)
*Tony about to kill Gerald's dad with an arrow (alternative)
*Judd Apatow's cameo apperance as "Homer" the lunch convict

Buy it NOW!!!

Yeah pretty good extras, especially for an 18 year old movie.

I never really noticed Judd Apatow in those days nor did anyone else but then thru several TV shoiws and then in 2005 with his first major director movie "40 Yr.Old Virgin" and his established stock company of actors (wife Leslie Mann, as well as Jane Lynch, etc.), he soon became really known for movies...also Adam Sandler director Steven Brill directed "Heavyweights".....long way for both from "Heavy Weights" now 21 years ago.

How about, a scene of the kids hidden candy being found out while they're gone and being replaced by health stuff..and they're forced to play Dodgeball (wink, wink). by Ben Stiller LOL.

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.
