That makes him 2 dollars poorer?

Freshs' father thought winning two bets at chess before fresh was late to their meeting made him two dollars poorer. Theres not alot of emphasis on what his logic was, had he not done that would he have been two dollars richer by "saving" his time? Its understood that he meant time is not money, but was his time or energy that valuable? After all, he was living in a trailer under a bridge so it looked like he didnt have a whole lot to lose and didnt care to gain much else. So what was behind his reasoning?

I think it was Esteban who said it best...

"Time is money and money is time little man and right now you are costing me plenty of both!"

I think that semblance of urgency was used throughout the film to remind Fresh of how important it was to take action and not procrastinate. If he really wanted change the time to act was now! And act he did!

No, he said he passed up two bets while waiting for Fresh, because they had an appointment to play.

Betting on chess was his "work," and he had lost time at that job while waiting for his son, in addition to the time he would already be taking "off" to play chess for free.

Right. But I interpreted his quote along the lines of "hey thats valuable time in my life that I will never be able to get back".
But hes basically a bum with flexible time. so how can he value time in the sense of, hey im two dollars poorer cause I had to wait for a chess apointment? I get what your saying but the terminaology of im actually two dollars poorer just didnt seem right. Am I wrong?

Well he must have known for sure that he would have won if he played against them.So because he waited for Fresh he let essentially said no to the 2 dollars.

"I think I liked it better when I thought Sylar ate brains."

I got the impression he seen two suckers that he would have beat at checkers and would have won the $2.00. He was willing to put his son above playing them for the money but since the son was late his time could have been used better by making the $2.00.
