I bought a copy of the DVD (non-bootleg) and it ends with Fresh crying in the park in front of his Dad then suddenly the screen goes black and 2 seconds later, the music starts playing and the credits start rolling - was this really the ending?
I feel this is one of the greatest final scenes ever. Though it is only a few seconds long, it is so powerful and says so much about the character and the things he has gone through.
to me when Fresh is crying its like he's finally venting his frustrations with life instead of walking around like a little tough soldier all of the time..
Fresh knew all along how things would end if his plan worked. He was crying because he knew he would have to leave his father for good. In terms of chess, his father was the Queen with all of the fancy moves that he hated to loose. But, he came to realize that in the end, it is just another piece on the board.
Great ending. The look of shame on Sam Jackson's face (not at his son, but at his own shortcomings as a father) is priceless.
Exactly, because all throughout the film Fresh is placed in a situation that very few adults could even handle, let alone a little kid. He's been robbed of his childhood. He's seen, experienced and been forced to participate in so much terrible stuff and It's all too much for him. Inside, Fresh has aged way beyond his years and carried the world on his shoulders.
Think about what he did to save his sister, that should've been his father's responsibility and duty, but he had to assume the role of saviour and protector. So to hear his clueless father (who has no idea what Fresh has been through) chastising him and warning that he won't always be around is the straw that breaks the camel's back.

I agree with everything you say except the father part. They were seperated, so (as Fresh implies) he's not allowed to see him. He's got no custody of the kids and they seperated. Wasn't exactly his fault, given that courts favor the women more. It's a shame.
