The musical score doesn't fit at all. A soundtrack by RZA much like the one he scored for Ghost Dog would have fit this movie better. I felt like the soundtrack detracted from the atmosphere. Also, Jake seems miscast. The character created for Jake was good. The actor that played him was not.
Those are my only two grievances. The story was pretty solid and the scenes with Samuel Jackson are enjoyable.
Back then RZA was just an underground rapper from Staten, not a guy scoring movies.
The thing about all the hood movies coming out in the early 90's was they all used NWA, 2Pac, G-Funk, gangster rap etc. So a movie scored by the guy from The Police made it stand out
Should have been released by a company other than Disney (that includes Disney and its outer companies, Miramax, Dimension, Touchstone, Hollywood)
like Universal
20th century Fox
Hell, even MGM
The music not being rap music is what makes it feel refreshing and timeless. It would still had been good with rap music though but it most certainly was not needed here.
