Is there anyone here who can verify whether they were making real chess moves the whole time? I find it hard to believe that Samuel L Jackson and a 14 year old actor would be able to memorize complete games?

no, they weren't. it's the only thing that bothered me about this movie.

Although I must say, it certainly wasn't the only thing that bothered me about the movie - the scenes with the dog were slightly more bothersome... although I can understand that to someone who appreciates speed chess, that would be quite irritating :-)

It's really very hard to see because of the angles they used. I tried but yeah it was impossible for me. And Sean Nelson had just turned 13 when they filmed this (editing and stuff takes a long time, plus it was first shown in January of 1994).

Yeah it would be tricky for anyone to do, especially if you have to memorize your lines as well... But yeah they shot it like that most likely because it wouldn't matter if the moves didn't make sense with who was in the end going to win.

Very late to this. I just watched this again for the 1st time in a LONG time. The 1st time he ever puts dad in check, dad makes a move we cannot see. Fresh puts him in check again. Dad then moves a rook (maybe queen) from his right all the way up the board and says check on Fresh. This could not have been a real move, as Dad's King would have still been in check from Fresh's last move and he could not have made the move he did as his King still would have been in check.
